1.3 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

A. None.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Contractor to submit one bucket of proposed material to the Contracting Officer’s Representative for approval.

B. Dry-stacked stone walls: Provide a field mock-up using actual material. Construct an 8-foot-long sample section, showing color range, texture, bond pattern, and joints. Approved section shall become the standard of comparison and remain in place until completion of wall work. Sample may be incorporated into completed wall. The area of the mock-up should be sufficient to show typical joints and conditions at end of wall and top of wall, for review and approval by the

Contracting Officer.

C. Carefully remove and store existing stone materials to be reinstalled. New stone materials shall match existing materials in color range and texture.

D. Contractor to provide quarry location to Contracting Officer Representative for approval.

E. Mason Qualification: Submit documentation indicating competence and experience of supervising mason, documenting at least 2 previous projects with similar type of work and similar material type.

YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 2

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Codes and Standards: Perform and provide the Work of Dry Stack Stone Walls in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal codes, laws, regulations, and accepted standard insdustry practice.

YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 3

B. Supervision: A person employed by the Contractor who is a qualified and experienced mason familiar with the type of materials being installed and the methods for their installation shall be present at all times during the execution of the work defined in this Section. Contractor or subcontractor performing working involving the construction of dry stack stone walls shall have experience in similar tasks and be a member of the Mason Contractors Association of America

(MCAA) or approved equivalent organization. Masons must be competent and experienced, and must have completed at least 2 previous projects with similar type of work and similar material type.

C. Substitutions of Material and Procurement of Material: Substitutions of material will not be permitted unless authorized in writing by the Contracting Officer’s Representative. Proof must be submitted by the Contractor that materials are unobtainable. Any substitution suggested by the

Contractor must be shown to be the equivalent of the specified material. The Contractor's written proposal will be considered for the use of the suggested material which includes any corresponding adjustment in the contract price and time. The proposal will be submitted to the

Contracting Officer’s Representative within twenty (20) workdays before beginning the Work of this Section.

D. Work Schedule: The work shall proceed as rapidly as possible. The Contractor shall make every effort to coordinate the work of this section with the work of other trades before, during, and after construction.

E. Warranty and Replacement

Representative upon completion of the work.

2. The Contractor shall replace at the Contractor's expense any item specified herein which is damaged during construction.

1.6 PRODUCT HANDLING

1. Store materials where directed under cover, off the ground, in a dry area.

PART 2 - MATERIALS

2.1 STONES FOR DRY-STACKED STONE WALL

A. Natural surface deposit weathered local granite stone, light gray in color, colloquially known as

Sierra White Granite; roughly rectangular in shape with weathered edges. Sources may be available at rock quarries in the Sierra Nevada region. Stones for wall sections are to be sound, hard, and shaped as shown on Drawings. Slight natural spotting, streaking or color variations will be acceptable on the exposed faces, providing there is no structural deterioration.

B. Granite may be salvaged from the project site and as available from grading operations. Granite salvaged from grading operations shall be shaped to sizes indicated on Drawings, and to remove sharp edges.

C. If additional granite boulders are needed, they shall be obtained outside the Park but must match the site rock in color and type. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to obtain all required stone, and to load, transport and shape the stone as required to meet the requirements for the final

YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 4

product. All rock is subject to approval by the Contracting Officer.

D. Size of stones shall be within the range of 12”-18” (One Man) and 36”-48” (Four Man) in average dimension.

YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 5

2.2 BASE AND DRAINAGE MATERIALS

A. Aggregate base: see Section 32 11 23 – Aggregate Base.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

Contractor shall work with Contracting Officer’s Representative to achieve stonework which complies with the intent of design as shown in the drawings.

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Do any necessary finish grading and compaction in addition to that performed in accordance with earthwork to bring subgrades after final compaction to required grades and sections as indicated.

3.2 EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL

A. See Section 31 23 00.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Roughly shape stone with a hammer to approximate fit. Knock off weak portions. Knob corners and returns square.

B. Remove or bury all plug and feather marks (drill holes).

C. In walls, use large stones for bottom courses and large selected stones at the corners. Generally, decrease size of stone from bottom to top.

D. In walls lay even colored, sound, quarry seam faces to weather on face of wall. Lay face stones in random bond with maximum 1-inch-wide joints. Fit small stones into irregular spaces to give appearance of random sizes and shapes.

E. Distribute headers throughout the wall mass. Extend headers through walls that are 24 inches or less in depth and into core or backing of walls that are deeper than 24 inches.

F. Slope tops of walls to shed water.

G. Place dry-laid stone to conceal all concrete footings. Dry-laid stone is to be stable and withstand climbing without shifting or moving. Distribute stones of various colors evenly throughout the work. Select stones roughly squared and pitched to line and place evenly at ends of wall. Lay stones that are flat or stratified in approximately horizontal position, not on edge.

H. Brush free of dust or other foreign matter before placing. Place stones with largest at bottom as keys. Provide batter on back side of wall as necessary for stability. Trim and shim stones as necessary to ensure firm, stable bedding upon one another.

I. Provide sufficient number of stones to install complete walls from lines and grades shown on the drawings and details.

YOSE - 312448 04 41 00 - 6

3.2 CLEAN UP

A. Remove any debris, waste products, and excess materials from the site.

B. Scrub completed wall with fiber brushes, using a mild alkaline abrasive cleaner that contains no caustic or harsh fillers. Begin at top and work down. Clean stone thoroughly, leaving no mortar stains or traces of cleaning compound.
