About this file
This document contains a service report from KEMEL USA regarding an inspection of shaft seal leakage on the vessel Henry Bigelow owned by NOAA. The report details a leakage rate of 40-60 gallons per day was noted by the Chief Engineer. Upon inspection, the mating ring recently installed by the ship's crew was found to have irregular wear indicating misalignment of the seal box. Measurements between the shaft journal and seal housing showed maximum centering deviation of 0.244 inches and squareness of approximately 0.060 inches, exceeding tolerances of 0.020 inches for both. Spare seals in satisfactory condition were noted. The seal housing and mounting hardware were in satisfactory integrity, with old leakage around some bolt holes likely due to gasket imperfection or improper sealant application to be rectified at the next drydock period. The recommendation is to accurately measure and realign the housing per KEMEL specifications at drydock, with the adapter plate possibly needing machining to offset misalignment and bring it back to center and square. New gaskets should be installed between the stern tube, adapter plate and seal housing and sealed with sealant.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for FY21 Henry Bigelow Drydock Repairs.

KEMEL USA Service Report
Vessel Henry Bigelow
Owner NOAA Service
Dates
Date:
FROM: 9/24/19
Location Newport, RI TO: 9/24/19
Purpose Investigation of KW-450 leakage
Detailed Summary : Leakage rate of 40-60 gallons/day noted by Chief
Engineer, being collected and monitored accordingly. New mating ring recently installed by ship’s crew, old mating ring noted to have irregular wear, indicating misalignment of seal box, noted .005” deep wear pattern at 12 o’clock position and .060” at 6 o’clock. Feeler gauge measurements taken between shaft journal and seal housing and noted that centering max deviation is .244”, and squareness approx .060”, tolerances on both of these measurements are .020”. Two spare seals in satisfactory condition noted on shaft journal. Integrity of seal housing and mounting hardware noted in satisfactory condition, old leakage noted around some bolt holes most likely due to gasket imperfection/improper sealant application, to be rectified at next drydock period.
Recommendation: At drydock period, housing should be accurately measured and re-aligned per KEMEL specs. Adapter plate may need to be machined to offset the misalignment and bring back to center and square. New gaskets to be installed between stern tube/adapter plate/seal housing and sealed with Permatex or similar sealant.
