About this file
This document is a USFS Tower Structural Analysis Form used for inspecting and documenting the structural characteristics of communication towers on U.S. Forest Service property.
The form captures comprehensive tower data for the Barillas Lookout tower (Site ID 031005L050501) located in Region 03/Forest 10, a 54 feet 5 inches tall self-supporting steel lookout tower with a square cross-section. The inspection was conducted on September 6, 2023, by Inspector Mohanad Ashor, with the P&T (Proof Testing) results recorded as Pass. The tower features K1 brace configurations across four documented sections, with section heights ranging from approximately 10 to 20 feet, varying leg sizes from L3x3x0.25" to L4x4x0.25", and gussets measuring 20"x11"x0.25". Bolts primarily consist of 3/4" and 7/8" sizes with 10 to 13 bolts per brace connection. The mounted equipment includes stairs platforms, hand rails, solar panels (three units ranging from 4'x1'x1" to 47"x21"x1"), and a dipole antenna measuring 10'x2"x1/8", with installation at varying elevations. Foundation information, guy wire system data, and tension testing results are documented as N/A, indicating either a non-guyed structure or data not collected during this inspection. The form includes detailed instructional guidance on structural data collection methodology, bracing type classifications (Z, X, K, M, Diamond, and Tapered configurations), and measurement standards for equipment mounting, offset distances, and component specifications.

Structural Analysis Work Instruction:
Key:
V=Vertical D=Diagonal P=Pipe/Tube OD=Outside Diameter #=Number of pieces H=Horizontal L=Angle S=Solid
• Guy System Configuration Bottom:
o Distance(s) from center of tower to top of anchor (fan plate, or eyelet).
o Turnbuckle size, bolt or fattener size connecting the turnbuckle to the anchor plate, saddle clamp size and number, guy anchor size and type.
• Guy System Configuration Top:
o Guy pull-off elevation(s).
o Turnbuckle size (if applicable), bolt or fattener size connecting the turnbuckle or guy wire to the tower, saddle clamp size and number, mounting bracket size and hardware size/configuration.
Guy System Data Collection Example:
USFS TOWER STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS FORM 7
• Structural analysis data collection:
o Face width is to be collected at the bottom of each section and at the top of the overall structure (not to include mast sections).
o If the top section of the tower converges to a single point extending above the tower it should be identified as a “mast” with dimensions provide in the face width row.
o Leg thickness should be collected on each leg of the tower at each section and entered as an average for each section.
o Towers with members designed to be climbed like a ladder should not be considered a mounted ladder.
o Tower panels are to be identified by each diagonal or set of diagonals. Example in a Z brace configuration presenting 7 diagonals in a section the tower has 7 panels in that section.
o (#xbolt) is asking the number of bolts and bolt size at a single connection point. Example a tower flange has 4 bolts, and each bolt is
5/8” in size (4x5/8”).
o If a tower horizontal is between gusset plates the length measurement is required.
o Tower section greater than 50ft shall be divided in 2 sections with the sections being separated at the top of the most centrally located horizontal brace.
Partial braces are to be regarded as a “Step”. Measure top off brace to top of brace.
Structural Analysis Data Collection Example:
USFS TOWER STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS FORM 8
• Equipment Inventory and Data Collection:
o Measure the elevation mounted to the first mounting point on the tower.
o Offset from the tower structure should be measured from outside of member attachment point to outside of equipment mount.
o Transmission line size, number, and spacing between lines (if applicable) should be identified separate from a mounted feed line ladder.
o Dimensional data for equipment should be entered (length x width x depth), with extension pipes like on dipoles measured as well
(diameter x length).
Mounted Equipment Data Collection Example:
