About this file

This is a USFS Tower Structural Analysis Form used for documenting and inspecting communication tower structures on U.S. Forest Service lands. The form provides a comprehensive framework for collecting and recording structural data on existing towers to support engineering analysis and maintenance planning.

The document captures detailed information across multiple dimensions: tower identification (location, type, height, material); foundation data including vertical load testing results for each leg (ranging from 3,250 to 5,200 PSI for the example Encino Lookout tower); mounted equipment inventory with precise elevation, offset, and dimensional specifications; stairway, platform, and railing configurations; and inner bracing details organized by section. The form includes a 59'6" tall, square cross-section, galvanized steel self-support tower with extensive antenna and solar panel equipment mounted at various elevations. Structural components are documented with member sizes, bolt specifications, and bracing types (X-brace, diamond configurations). The inspection yielded a passing P&T (Proof Test) result and was completed on 5/13/2025 by Inspector Tanner Burnett under Engineer Mohanad Ashor. The document serves as a standardized data collection instrument containing instructional diagrams, equipment photo references, antenna type examples, and bracing type illustrations to ensure consistent and thorough tower assessments across USFS regions.

USFS TOWER STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS FORM 8

Structural Analysis Work Instruction:

Guy System Configuration Bottom:

o Distance(s) from center of tower to the top of anchor rod.

o Anchor rod size.

Guy System Configuration Top:

o Guy pull-off elevation(s) from foundation to the base of the pull-off.

o Guy pull-off type. Standard types are flat bars, angles, double angles, channels, solid rounds, and pipe.

o Guy pull-off size. Material width and depth or thickness. Take a picture.

Guy System Data Collection Example:

Tower Leg: Guy System Bottom Configuration Guy System Top Configuration

Leg A:

Anchor Rod Thickness S1.25” Elevation 48’ 3” Pull off Style Flat

Distance (Anchor Rod to Tower Center)

105’ 6” Azimuth Degrees° 0 degrees Hardware Size 1x5/8”

Pull off Dimensions 2”x0.375”

Structural analysis data collection:

o Face width is to be collected at the bottom of each section and at the top of the overall structure (not to include mast sections).

o If the top section of the tower converges to a single point extending above the tower it should be identified as a “mast” with dimensions provide in the face width row.

o Leg thickness should be collected on each leg of the tower at each section and entered as an average for each section.

o Towers with members designed to be climbed like a ladder should not be considered a mounted ladder.

o Tower panels are to be identified by each diagonal or set of diagonals. Example in a Z brace configuration presenting 7 diagonals in a section the tower has 7 panels in that section.

o (#xbolt) is asking the number of bolts and bolt size at a single connection point. Example a tower flange has 4 bolts, and each bolt is

5/8” in size (4x5/8”).

o If a tower horizontal is between gusset plates the length measurement is required.

o Tower section greater than 50ft shall be divided in 2 sections with the sections being separated at the top of the most centrally located horizontal brace.

Partial braces are to be regarded as a “Step”. Measure top of brace to top of brace.

Structural Analysis Data Collection Example:

Equipment Inventory and Data Collection:

o Measure the elevation mounted to the first mounting point on the tower.

o Offset from the tower structure should be measured from outside of member attachment point to outside of equipment mount.

o Transmission line size, number, and spacing between lines (if applicable) should be identified separate from a mounted feed line ladder.

o Dimensional data for equipment should be entered (length x width x depth), with extension pipes like on dipoles measured as well

(diameter x length).
