About this file
This file contains Requests for Information (RFIs) and USDA responses related to Solicitation 12639526Q0088 for the construction of a new kennel building at a USDA-APHIS Wildlife Services Predator Research Facility. The approximately 3,400 square foot pre-engineered metal building will contain four sections: kennel areas A & B, a mud room, and a mechanical room. Design documents were developed by A&E firm Cushing Terrell.
The RFIs address five key construction and engineering clarifications: (1) PEMB bracing preference between Grids 2 and 3, with USDA selecting standard X-bracing over Portal Frames; (2) utility power line responsibility and routing on page C300, Key Note 16, determined to be contractor responsibility after coordination with the utility company; (3) power line interception and supply for utility-supplied transformer on page C300, Key Notes 3 and 17, also assigned to contractor responsibility; (4) boiler sizing concerns and copper fitting specifications, with response confirming ProPress copper fittings are acceptable per specification section 232113 and pricing to be quoted per drawings and specifications; and (5) barn door specifications for north and south CMU building ends, clarified as 10 feet wide by 8 feet high doors with steel frame/plywood core, galvanneal steel cladding, box track slider rail hardware, hook and eye lock, and cane floor bolt.

RFIs and Responses, 12639526Q0088
1. PEMB Construction: For the bracing between Grids 2 and 3 (as generated by the building manufacturer) at Grid Lines A&D, would the USDA prefer the standard X-Bracing between the steel frames at the vertical sections, or would the USDA prefer Portal Frames, which would add the proper tension required in the mentioned areas and would not impede any foot traffic to the Kennel. Information on the Portal Framing can be found at Steelconstruction.info/portal frames.
X-bracing
2. On page C300, Key Note 16, intercept the BP Line and move it from the building's footprint. Does this BP line belong to the Utility Power Company or the customer? If the BP line belongs to the customer, is the intercept and re-routing the responsibility of the contractor performing the work?
For 2 & 3. The buried power appears to belong to the customer. Attached are documents our surveyor obtained from the power company showing a connection to the existing veterinary/office building on site. The work noted in the drawing will need to be coordinated with the utility company and is performed by the contractor.
3. On page C300, Key Notes 3 and 17, intercept the BP Line to supply power to the utility-supplied transformer. Does this BP line belong to the Utility Power Company or the customer? If the BP line belongs to the customer, is the intercept and supply power the responsibility of the contractor performing the work?
4. According to plumbers the boiler is way oversize. Would you want us to provide a cost savings for a smaller one just as a VE option? Are ProPress copper fittings acceptable?
Please quote the equipment size based on drawings and specifications. The press seal type of copper fittings are currently listed on P002 plumbing specifications. Press seal type of copper fittings are also covered in spec section 232113.
5. The sliding doors located at both North and South ends of the CMU portion of the building do not seem to have any mention in the specs. Please advise on preference for style and finishes including hardware.
The barn doors are 10’ W x 8’ H, constructed with a steel frame/ plywood core and are to have painted galvanneal steal cladding. The door hardware is a box track slider rail, hook and eye lock and cane floor bolt.
