About this file

This is a Road Bridge Inspection Report for the Davidson R. Bridge, a steel channel beam structure carrying USDA Forest Service Road 803 over the Davidson River in Transylvania County, North Carolina. The routine inspection was conducted on July 12, 2023, by inspection team leader Bart Asher of the USDA Forest Service, Region 8. The bridge, built in 1965 and reconstructed in 1999, spans 100 feet with a maximum span of 64 feet, carries 2-way traffic on a 22-foot-wide roadway with an average daily traffic count of 300 vehicles, and accommodates standard highway vehicles with load ratings including HL-93 (0.88 rating factor), HS20-44 (33 tons safe load), and Type 3 vehicles (41 tons safe load). The structure consists of three main steel girder spans supported by reinforced concrete column piers and abutments, with an overall condition rating of Good for the deck, superstructure, and substructure elements.

The inspection identified minor deficiencies requiring maintenance, including hairline cracking on the deck underside, 1/4-inch deep scaling with map cracking on the deck topside, several deck joints that have pulled apart in downstream utility lines, minor paint flaking with surface rust on girders, and up to 3/8-inch scaling and abrasion at the base of pier columns with random spalling. Recommended work includes routine bridge inspection every 24 months and riprap embankment repair on approach fill. The bridge is posted as Open with No Restriction at or Above Legal Loads. Channel and waterway adequacy received a rating of 7 (Good), with scour critical bridge evaluation assigned a code of 5 indicating ideal field conditions with no active scour issues. Structural evaluation was rated 6 (Adequate), deck geometry 4 (Marginal), and approach roadway alignment 8 (Excellent), with specialized inspections determined unnecessary.
