About this file
This is a mooring buoy inspection and maintenance report completed by Hanson Maritime Co. for the Sitka Ranger District in October 2022. The report documents detailed underwater inspections of 13 mooring buoys located at area cabins throughout the region, with findings sworn to be accurate and unbiased.
The inspections reveal highly variable conditions across the 13 mooring sites, ranging from "very good" to "failed." Redoubt Bay presents the most critical situation, rated "very poor/failed," with severely wasted chain mid-length, a loose anchor bail in danger of pulling from concrete, loose tie rods, and severe buoy deterioration—requiring immediate replacement and potential location adjustment. Kanga Bay and Piper Island also warrant urgent attention, with the latter's anchor overturned and rolled downhill. Conversely, Samsing Cove and Moser (which underwent total replacement) are rated "very good," while Seven Fathom, Mud Bay, and others are rated "good" to "fair-good." Most sites exhibit common issues including consumed anodes, galvanizing deterioration, hard biotic growth, and varying degrees of chain corrosion. Recommendations include anode replacement (primarily 2-3 per site), chain replacement at multiple locations, anchor replacement or repositioning, and future monitoring cycles. Several sites received maintenance during 2022, including chain lengthening at Mud Bay and anchor uprighting at Allan Point and Piper Island. The report documents specific measurements of chain dimensions at 10-foot depth intervals and component conditions to guide future maintenance planning.

Sitka Ranger District 2021 Mooring Buoy Maintenance
Completed October 2022
Hanson Maritime Co. Submits the following observations of 13 mooring buoys, in place and intended for use at area cabins. It is unknown what size vessels the moorings are intended for and because of this, Hanson Maritime is not making a determination as to whether or not a mooring is safe. When a mooring has significant wastage and clearly does not meet basic maritime standards, a recommendation is made, but without regard for vessel size.
All sites had inspections and some level of maintenance, and one, Moser Island, was a total replacement.
Hanson Maritime Co. has put forth best endeavors to provide a useful and accurate product that the Sitka Ranger District can use for future planning and maintenance.
Findings are sworn to be accurate and unbiased.

Location: Piper Island
Date: 19 September 2022
Diver: Robert Reid
Leave Surface: 1553 Return Surface: 1622
Anchor Depth: 59
Latitude & Longitude: 57˚23.31 x 135˚35.51
Buoy: Heavy, hard growth. Lower galvanizing consumed. Inner chain tube is extended and jammed 12” + above buoy top.
Anode: 80% remaining, appears to be passive.
0’ - 23mm- *Chain is DI-LOK style and is larger than 7/8” originally 10’ - 22mm- 20’ - 23mm- 30’ - 23mm- 40’ - 23mm- 50’ - 14mm- 60’ - 19mm- 70’ - 22mm- 80’ - 23mm-
Bail: Unkown Shackle: Unknown Mousing Wire: Unknown Anchor: Concrete very good
Overall Condition: The anchor is upside down and on top of the chain. The slope it is on is very steep and with a loose “ball bearing” type bottom composition. It appears that the anchor has rolled down hill since the last inspection through a combination of a large vessel, steep slope and windy conditions. It is recommended that the anchor be lifted and replaced in original position.

Bail: 13mm Shackle: New Mousing Wire: New Anchor: Concrete in good condition. Bail is a smaller size chain and has uniform scalloped wastage but is still sound. Concrete around bail is solid with no concerns.
Anchor is on side.
Overall Condition:
Fair. Chain is new but buoy is aged with significant corrosion. This mooring should be suitable until the next maintenance cycle.

Bail: New Shackle: New Mousing Wire: New Anchor: New
Overall Condition: The new anchor was placed on the same location as the old, but it appears that the old anchor has been drug off station. This was the case 4 years ago also. Moving the mooring to the center of the cove, or closer to the cabin would be an improvement.
