About this file

This document outlines a change to the smoking policy at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois. Beginning October 1, 2019, smoking and the use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, vape pens, e-cigarettes and e-cigars, will be prohibited on the entire VA hospital campus for patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors and employees. Those unable to comply may receive a federal citation. The policy aims to provide a safe and healthy environment free of smoke and tobacco, especially near oxygen and medical gases. The VA hospital will also offer assistance to veterans who wish to quit tobacco use.

The related federal contract opportunity involves roof repairs to buildings 113, 128 and 220 at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital. The solicitation was issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration Veterans Integrated Service Network 12. No further details on the required work, response deadline or award date are provided in the document.

VA U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital 5000 S. 5th Avenue Hines, IL 60141 708-202-8387

Veterans Health Administration

Dear Veteran, The Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is changing our smoking policy to provide a safe and healthy environment. The policy covers all smoking and tobacco material including but not limited to:

• Cigarettes

• Cigars

• Pipes

• Chewing tobacco

• Vape pens, e-cigarettes, or e-cigars.

Beginning October 1, 2019, smoking and tobacco use will no longer be allowed on the VA campus for patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors, and employees. Those unable to comply with this change may receive a Federal citation (ticket).

You are encouraged to leave all tobacco products and devices at home. To reduce the risk of fire near oxygen and other gases used at our site, you may be required to store tobacco products and devices if visiting certain areas of the hospital.

Hines VA can help Veterans quit tobacco use. If you would like more information about this service, please contact your Primary Care Team.

Thank you for serving our country and allowing us to care for you.

Steven E. Braverman, M.D.

Hospital Director
