About this file

This technical exhibit outlines operating procedures for the Southern Port Security Barrier at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia. The barrier contains a small 50-foot gate for vessels like tugs and boats, and a large 500-foot gate for submarines and large ships. Port operations personnel must contact the SWFLANT Command Duty Officer for permission to open either gate. Timelines are provided for coordinating gate openings and closings around submarine departures and arrivals, including requirements to contact the Duty Officer an hour in advance for the large gate. Responsibilities are defined for harbor pilots to verify gate status during transits, and for harbor control to inspect barrier equipment and only open and close the gate under certain sea conditions with a minimum crew of three on the barrier boat from sunset to sunrise.
