BARGE INSPECTION

REPORT NO. 5791 AUGUST 12, 2022

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: This is to certify that the undersigned surveyor at the request of Kelly Wright, State of Maryland, Department of Natural Resources, Engineering and

Construction Division, 580 Taylor Avenue, D-3, Annapolis, Maryland, 21401, attended the barge out of the water at DNR E/C Terminal, 301 Cemetery Avenue, Cambridge, Maryland, 21613, on the 12th day of August in the year 2022, and did an inspection of the deck, hull sides, bottom, and interior to determine overall condition and establish areas of repair. As per contract, the barge was inspected for structural integrity. All accessible compartments were inspected for structural defects. Random ultrasonic readings were taken.

DESCRIPTION

The barge is a spud barge referred to as “CHESAPEAKE.” The approximate measurements are:

LOA 80’0”, BEAM 26’0”, and DEPTH 5’0”. The barge consists of 6 compartments. The deck frames consist of 3” x 4” angle iron 24” on center. The side frames consist of 3” x 4” angle iron

24” on center. The bottom frames consist of 3” x 4” angle iron 24” on center. The transverse bulkhead frames consist of 2” x 3” angle iron 24” on center. The longitudinal truss frames consist of 2” x 6” channel, 4” x 4” angle iron stanchions, and 3” x 3” angle iron diagonals. The deck, hull, and bottom consist of 3/8” plate steel.

EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE

The inspection was conducted using a Cygnus 1 heavy duty multiple echo ultrasonic thickness gauge and Check Line Wall thickness gauge TI-CMX calibrated for steel.

FORWARD RAKE EXTERIOR

The forward rake has a fair amount of heavy scaling above the water line. However, the readings for the steel thickness were found to be satisfactory. All seven readings were .370” to .375”.

The upper rub rail has light rusting and most of the paint is worn away. There is some pitting along the port side corner of the rake.

PORT SIDE EXTERIOR (cont.)

The port side exterior has random pitting running between the upper and lower rub rails and at this time do not see any need for replacement of steel. Readings of this area taken from the interior show amble metal remaining

Exterior will need to be sandblasted, primed and painted.

RECOMMENDATIONS

a) The pitting on the deck should be grind out, and the deck resealed. Also, remove all timbers from the deck.

b) Replace both winch cables.

c) Replace both winch hydraulic lines.

d) Replace the starboard side winch bracket leg.

e) Have the installation of the generator and winch motor comply with A.B.Y.C standards.

f) The only work recommended for compartment #1, as preventive maintenance, clean and reseal the bottom framing. Remove rust and scaling from the deck frame at manhole and reseal.

g) The work recommended for compartment #2 is the replacement of the five-foot top section of

2” x 6” channel of the #2 longitudinal truss, and replace the 3” x 3” diagonal. It would be recommended to add 5/16” x 3” x 6” flat bar welded vertically under each deck frame to act as a squash block. As prevented maintenance, it is recommended to clean and seal all rust from both port and starboard side knuckles and the base of the forward and aft bulkheads. Remove the rust residue from the bottom plate.

h) The work recommended for compartment #3 is the replacement of the three-foot top section of

2” x 6” channel of the #2 longitudinal truss. It would be recommended to add 5/16” x 3” x 6” flat bar welded vertically under each deck frame to act as a squash block. As prevented maintenance, it is recommended to clean and seal all rust from the underside of the deck, hull sides, forward and aft bulkheads, and framing and the removal of the rust residue on the bottom plate.

i) The work recommended for compartment #4 is the replacement of the five-foot top section of

2” x 6” channel of the #2 longitudinal truss. It would be recommended to add 5/16” x 3” x 6” flat bar welded vertically under each deck frame to act as a squash block. As prevented maintenance, it is recommended to clean and seal all rust from the bottom and 16” up from the bottom along the forward bulkhead, aft bulkhead and both port and starboard hull sides.

j) The work recommended for compartment #5 is the replacement of the five-foot top section of

2” x 6” channel of the #2 longitudinal truss. Restore the 6’ x 6’ section of deck back to shape or replace. Replace the ¼” x 3” x 4” x 7’ deck frame #2. It would be recommended to add

5/16” x 3” x 6” flat bar welded vertically under each deck frame to act as a squash block.

Replace the 3/8” x 6’ section of the knuckle that is damaged between the forward bulkhead

RECOMMENDATIONS (cont) and frame #2. As prevented maintenance its recommended to clean and seal all rust from the bottom and bottom frames.

k) The only work recommended for compartment #6, as preventive maintenance, is to clean and reseal the bottom frames.

l) On the exterior starboard side from at the 42 foot mark to the 47 foot mark and approximately

14” wide, cut out heavy steel scaling area and replace with new steel.

m) Sandblast exterior hull sides along with the forward and aft rakes, prime and paint

n) Repair the pitting on the forward port corner.
