939.01 – Construct Prefabricated Trail Tower
Description
939.01.01 This work consists of the fabrication, delivery and construction/anchorage of a galvanized prefabricated trail tower with staircase. Galvanization shall be in accordance with
AASHTO M 232.
Materials
939.01.02 A galvanized steel staircase shall be provided with a slip resistant stair tread and galvanized steel grid landings capable of supporting pedestrian live load per international building code and designed considering wind loading (lateral supports required). Galvanized steel railing shall also be provided along the stairs and landings and shall be 42” minimum above the tread and landings. Rail openings shall be small enough such that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through them. Bolted connections shall be utilized where possible to avoid field welding. Where field welding is required, welds shall be smoothed and coated with zinc to prevent corrosion. The dimensions of the staircase are approximate, but it is the intention of this work to provide a staircase with tread rise/run as shown on the profile view of the tower (See Plan Sheet 18) with target elevations for the landings as indicated. The stair tread and landings are required to be 5’ wide. Steel tubing and metal grating shown on Sheet 18 are for conceptual purposes only and shall be design by a Professional Engineer. Shop drawings shall be submitted to the Project Engineer and approved before ordering from the fabricator. Final drawings for the Prefabricated Staircase shall be signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in North Carolina.
Construction
939.01.03 Construct the trail tower at the location SHOWN ON THE PLANS. The tower legs shall be anchored into the adjacent rock in the field and shall consist of a 16”x16”x1” base plate.
Locations at the bolted connections shall be prepared and leveled and the final footing design shall be approved, signed and sealed by a professional engineer. Connection details and footing requirements shall be considered incidental to this work item and included in this pay item for completing the work. While the plans show the trail continuing in the future, the top of the trail tower at completion of Phase 1B (shown as “exit”) shall be fully enclosed with the specified railing to prevent falls. The top of the staircase will serve as a termination point landing/view deck until Phase 1C is completed and at such time the “temporary” railing will be removed under the work performed in Phase 1C.
Measurement and Payment
939.01.04 Measurement of this pay item shall be made at the unit price LS for Prefabricated Trail Tower installed and approved and payment will be full compensation for the work prescribed in this section.
