About this opportunity

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is soliciting applications for institutional predoctoral and postdoctoral training programs in biomedical informatics, data science, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), with an application deadline of February 11, 2027. Domestic higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, federally recognized tribal governments, and other domestic nonprofit organizations are eligible; non-domestic entities and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

NLM anticipates awarding 19–27 grants totaling approximately $17.1 million, with individual award budgets capped at $775,000 in direct costs over a maximum five-year project period. Indirect costs are reimbursed at 8 percent of modified total direct costs. Programs may support up to 10 trainees total, including up to 3 postdoctoral fellows; additional disease-specific slots are available for applications aligned with participating institutes' research priorities (National Eye Institute, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and National Cancer Institute, with co-funding from the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research and Office of Data Science Strategy).

Applications must propose either new training programs or renewal of existing NLM-supported programs. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing full-time research training. Predoctoral appointees must pursue doctoral degrees in informatics or related fields; postdoctoral appointees must demonstrate training gaps to be addressed through formal curricula. Required application components include a detailed training program plan with core curriculum in informatics principles, quantitative methods, computer science, and rigorous research design; faculty mentoring expertise documentation; trainee recruitment and selection procedures; program evaluation methodology; and institutional commitment documentation. Applications must comply with NIH registration requirements (SAM, UEI, eRA Commons, Grants.gov) prior to submission and follow Training (T) instructions in the NIH How to Apply Application Guide with program-specific modifications. This opportunity falls under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support).

Synopsis

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) invites applications for innovative predoctoral and postdoctoral training programs that prepare the next generation of researchers in biomedical informatics, data science, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML). NLM emphasizes cutting-edge, forward-looking training experiences that equip trainees to address complex health and biomedical challenges through advanced computational approaches. Applications may propose the creation of new training programs or the renewal of existing NLM-supported programs. These programs are designed to meet the growing demand for researchers with deep expertise in biomedical computing, data science, and AI/ML, with clear relevance to health and biomedical research. Recognizing the inherently interdisciplinary nature of these fields, NLM seeks programs that integrate methods and perspectives across disciplines to advance biomedical informatics, data science, and AI/ML.
