About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Required) with an application due date of May 7, 2027. This career development program is open to a broad range of eligible applicant types including higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits, state and local governments, small businesses, and for-profit organizations; non-U.S. entities and their non-domestic components are ineligible, though foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted.

The program funds the transition of postdoctoral researchers holding research or clinical doctorates from mentored positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty roles. Awards provide up to five years of support: an initial K99 phase of up to two years followed by an R00 independent research phase of up to three years. The program is co-funded by multiple NIH institutes and centers including the Office of Research on Women's Health, the Division of Lung Diseases, the Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science, and offices supporting cardiovascular, mental health, diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases, and aging research (CFDA 93.313, 93.838, 93.837, 93.242, 93.847, 93.866).

Eligible applicants include postdoctoral researchers with Ph.D., M.D., or other research or clinical doctorates. The program evaluates applications through dual peer review for scientific and technical merit, followed by secondary review by relevant national advisory councils. Applications must demonstrate a clear transition plan to independence and alignment with NIH institute and center priorities. Awardees are expected to launch competitive independent research careers with NIH support. The application package requires use of either General Instructions or Career Development Instructions, with specific forms identified in the funding opportunity announcement.
