About this opportunity

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), with other NIH Institutes and Centers including the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), and Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for research on Theories, Models and Methods for Analysis of Complex Data from the Brain (TMM) with an application due date of November 8, 2027. Applications are not currently being solicited; this is advance notice to allow development of collaborations and responsive projects.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, higher education institutions (public and private), tribal organizations and governments, public or Indian housing authorities, county governments, for-profit organizations, small businesses, independent school districts, federal agencies, faith-based or community-based organizations, non-federally-recognized tribal entities, non-U.S. entities, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions.

The program supports applications focused on tool building and dissemination in the domain of theories about neural circuit mechanisms, models of circuit structure and function, and computational methods of analysis spanning the scale of neurons and firing rates (or proxies thereof), or finer resolution. The NOFO will utilize the R01 activity code. Research applications focusing on computational tools for understanding dynamic brain circuits—made broadly accessible to the research community—are the central objective. The program aims to develop novel theories, computational models, and methods characterizing fundamental principles of brain function, cellular and circuit-level neural computations across time and regions, and how multiple brain circuits enable flexible behaviors and contribute to brain-wide neural dynamics. Development of these tools is intended to support treatment development, including closed-loop systems for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and major depressive disorder. Investigators with expertise in computational models, neural computations, and artificial intelligence are encouraged to begin developing proposals.

Synopsis

The Theories, Models and Methods (TMM) initiative will support the development of computational tools for understanding dynamic brain circuits that are made broadly accessible to the greater research community. This program supports applications focused on tool building and dissemination in the domain of theories about neural circuit mechanisms, models of circuit structure and function, and/or computational methods of analysis spanning across scales from neurons to behavior. The development of novel theories, computational models and methods for understanding brain function will help characterize fundamental principles of brain function and organization, characterize cellular and circuit-level neural computations over time in different regions, and understand how interactions of multiple brain circuits enable flexible behaviors and contribute to brain-wide neural dynamics. These tools will be critical for developing treatments such as closed loop systems for brain disorders including Parkinsons disease and major depressive disorder.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; U.S. Territory or Possession.
