About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health's Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative seeks applications to develop scalable technologies for mapping brain connectivity with an application due date of October 4, 2027, using the U01 Cooperative Agreement mechanism, which entails substantial NIH programmatic involvement including milestone negotiations and mandatory network integration.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, and non-domestic (foreign) entities. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations may apply; however, foreign subawards and subcontracts are prohibited. Clinical trials are not permitted. The NIH intends to commit approximately $10 million in first-year funding for an estimated 3–6 awards with a maximum project period of 3 years and budgets reflecting actual project needs. The earliest start date for funded projects is July 9, 2027.
Applications may address any aspect of brain connectivity pipeline development, including tissue processing, data collection, reconstruction, alignment, segmentation, annotation, error correction, analysis, integration, dissemination, and interpretation. The program emphasizes human, non-human primate, and mouse brain mapping; projects using other species are permitted if well justified for validation purposes. All funded projects must integrate into the BRAIN CONNECTS Network, participate in annual in-person meetings, share data according to established policies, and disclose algorithms and software source code to network members.
Review criteria emphasize significance and innovation in advancing scalable brain connectivity technologies, rigor and feasibility of approaches with defined performance metrics and milestones meeting SMART criteria, and investigator expertise with appropriate institutional resources. Applications undergo peer review by scientific review groups convened by the Center for Scientific Review, with final funding decisions made by the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council based on scientific merit, program relevance, and fund availability. Applications must include a Data Management and Sharing Plan, Feasibility Metrics and Milestones section, letters of support, and a Resource Sharing Plan. Multiple NIH institutes participate, including NINDS, NEI, NIA, NIAAA, NIBIB, NICHD, NIDCD, NIDA, NIMH, and NCCIH.

Update #2 · Latest ·
This funding announcement, issued by the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® (BRAIN) Initiative, seeks transformative, cutting-edge, and innovative research that embraces new technologies, ideas, and approaches to understand brain circuit function and contributions to behavior. It is a component of the BRAIN Initiative Connectivity Across Scales (BRAIN CONNECTS) Program, which aims to lay the scientific foundation for the next generation of neural circuit-based approaches for preventing and treating devastating brain disorders.
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) supports Specialized Projects to develop current or emerging technologies to generate comprehensive atlases of brain connectivity, with an emphasis on human, non-human primate (NHP), and mouse. Projects using other species are also permitted, if their use is well justified and the goal is to test and validate approaches that can be generalized across species. Applications may address any aspect(s) of brain connectivity and associated data pipelines, including data collection, reconstruction, analysis, integration, dissemination, and interpretation, to enable faster, more precise, and more cost-effective generation and interpretation of brain-wide wiring diagrams. Funded projects will be integrated into the BRAIN CONNECTS Network consisting of projects funded under this and preceding BRAIN CONNECTS NOFOs, as a coordinated effort aimed at developing the capabilities to generate wiring diagrams that can span entire brains across multiple scales.
