About this opportunity
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory seeks information on the design, fabrication, and potential assembly and installation of a suspended work platform system for the MAGIS-100 experiment, with responses due July 20, 2026. Amendment 01, issued July 10, extended the original July 14 deadline by six days.
Place of performance is Batavia, Illinois, at the Fermilab site. The suspended work platform system must provide safe personnel access to instrumentation suspended vertically in a 100-meter deep shaft and accommodate three access methods: ladder access for platforms within 26 feet of the shaft top, suspended scaffold or crane-supported basket access for mid-shaft platforms, and scissor lift access for platforms within 32.5 feet of the shaft bottom.
The moveable scaffold must measure approximately 64 inches deep by 68 inches wide with a 40-inch extension, carry a minimum safety rating of 4 times the maximum intended load of 2,000 pounds plus its own weight (total rating greater than 8,000 pounds), support a 500-pound point load at any location, include a roof to deflect falling objects, provide sufficient tie-off points, feature 2-inch square railing at 41 inches height, and remain stable for mechanical assembly tasks such as bolt torquing to 200 foot-pounds. The scaffold must comply with OSHA and all applicable safety requirements.
Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC is operating this laboratory on behalf of the Department of Energy. Procurement of equipment is anticipated near the end of 2026, with the project currently in Preliminary Design phase. NAICS 332323 (Ornamental and Architectural Metal Work Manufacturing) and PSC 5440 (Scaffolding Equipment and Concrete Forms) apply. Minimum submission requirements include sketch, drawing, or model; budgetary cost estimate and lead time; assembly and installation procedures; examples of previous similar work; and design recommendations. A virtual pre-RFI meeting is scheduled for June 25 at 2:00 p.m. Central Time. All interested parties will be included in the bidders list for any subsequent Request for Proposal. This RFI is information-gathering only and does not commit the Government to award a subcontract.
