About this file

This is a research poster describing the MAGIS-100 experiment, a matter-wave atomic gradiometer interferometric sensor being developed at Fermilab under U.S. Department of Energy contract No. 89243024CSC000002. The project is not a procurement solicitation but rather documentation of a completed or ongoing scientific research initiative.

The MAGIS-100 experiment involves installation of complex subsystems within a 100-meter shaft and requires specialized technical capabilities including civil, mechanical, and vacuum engineering; laser systems and interlocks; controls and networking; safety systems; and assembly and installation of precision scientific instruments. Key components include three strontium atom sources positioned at the top, middle, and bottom of the shaft; a 6-inch diameter stainless steel vacuum tube system designed to achieve ultra-high vacuum levels down to -11 Torr; a heating system capable of reaching 150 degrees Celsius; magnetic field systems including bias field coils and octagonal mu metal shielding; 17 modular sections with support frames and optical components; an imaging and distributed camera system; and a retroreflection mirror system at the shaft bottom. The project leverages Fermilab's existing shaft and laboratory infrastructure, along with contributions from partner institutions including Stanford, SLAC, University of Liverpool, University of Cambridge, and Northwestern University.

Railing around curved wall of shaft at ground level is omitted for clarity.

This work was produced by FermiForward Discovery Group, LLC under Contract No. 89243024CSC000002 with the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of High Energy Physics. MAGIS-100 is a blend of accelerator and detector technology and requires technical excellence which Fermilab has:

• Civil, mechanical, and vacuum engineering

• Lasers and interlocks

• Controls and networking

• Safety systems

• Assembly and installation of large yet delicate scientific instruments

• Data collection, storage, scientific computing and data analysis

• Existing shaft and laboratory infrastructure

• 3x strontium atom sources at top, middle, and bottom of shaft

• Interferometry laser system (see other poster for details)

• 17x modular sections with support frames, vacuum, magnetic, and optical system components

• Vacuum system to reach ultra-high vacuum (UHV) down to -11

Torr

- 6” diameter stainless steel vacuum tube

- UHV pumps, gauges, and controls

- Heating system with controls and temperature sensors to reach 150C

• Magnetic field system

- Bias field coils to create optimal field

- Octagonal mu metal shield to block external interference

• Imaging and distributed camera system

• Retroreflection mirror system at bottom of shaft to reflect laser light back up the shaft with minimal scattering

• Platforms to provide safe personnel access
