About this file

This is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), an Office of Science Laboratory operated by Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FFDG) on behalf of the Department of Energy. Fermilab seeks vendor information regarding a suspended work platform system designed to provide personnel safe access to the MAGIS-100 experiment instrumentation suspended vertically in a 100-meter deep shaft. The system must accommodate three access methods: ladder access for platforms within 26 feet of the shaft top, suspended scaffold or crane-supported basket access for mid-shaft platforms, and scissor lift access for platforms within 32.5 feet of the shaft bottom. FFDG has developed a stabilizer assembly to secure suspended scaffolds and prevent horizontal movement during personnel transfers between platforms. Procurement of equipment is anticipated near the end of 2026, with the project currently in the Preliminary Design phase.

Responses must be submitted via email to Procurement Specialist Danielle Amico at damico@fnal.gov by July 14, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Central Time. A virtual pre-RFI meeting is scheduled for June 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Central Time. Minimum submission requirements include a sketch, drawing, or model of the suspended scaffold design; budgetary cost estimate and lead time for parts delivery; assembly and installation procedures; examples of previous similar work; and design recommendations. All interested parties will be included in the bidders list for any subsequent Request for Proposal. Participation in this RFI does not commit FFDG or the U.S. Government to pay preparation costs or imply any promises regarding future subcontract awards. Responses will be used solely for information and planning purposes, and no subcontract will be awarded as a result of this RFI.

Request for Information (RFI)

MAGIS-100 Suspended Work Platform System June 10, 2026

1. INTRODUCTION

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is an Office of Science Laboratory managed and operated on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE) by Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FFDG).

FFDG is requesting information regarding a suspended work platform system designed for personnel to safely access regions of the MAGIS-100 experiment (see Attachment 2 for more information) in a vertical shaft. The project is currently in the Preliminary Design phase, with procurement of the required equipment anticipated near the end of 2026. During this planning stage, it is essential to understand vendors’ capabilities to meet the specific requirements for this project. The purpose of this RFI is to identify vendors who can design, fabricate, and potentially assemble and install the required scaffolding system.

The MAGIS-100 experiment consists of instrumentation that is suspended vertically along the height of a

100m deep shaft. Platforms are needed to provide access to the instrumentation so that regular maintenance can occur. The platforms located within 26ft of the top of the shaft will primarily be accessed via ladders from the ground floor. Platforms in the middle of the shaft will be accessed via a suspended scaffold supported by davits or an access basket suspended from the overhead crane. The platform at the bottom of the shaft within 32.5ft will primarily be accessed via scissor lift from the bottom floor of the shaft. FFDG has developed a stabilizer assembly that can be used at discrete points to secure the suspended scaffold or basket to each work platform to prevent movement in the horizontal plane so that personnel can safely transfer from one to the other.

Please note that this Request for Information (RFI) is for informational purposes only -- no subcontract will be awarded as a result. A response to the RFI, or lack thereof, will have no impact on the evaluation of responses to any subsequent Request for Proposals (RFP). Responses will be used solely for information and planning purposes.

5. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The information requested in support of this RFI should be submitted via email. Responders may also include additional information.

At a minimum, the responder should include the following information:

mailto:damico@fnal.gov mailto:damico@fnal.gov

• Sketch, drawing, and/or model of a suspended scaffold design that aligns with the requirements listed in the attached SOW.

• Budgetary cost estimate and lead time to deliver the scaffolding parts.

• A description of the assembly and installation procedure needed to operate the scaffolding.

• Examples of previous work designing, fabricating, and/or installing similar platforms if available.

• Design recommendations and proposed adjustments are welcome.

All images and drawings provided by Fermilab are conceptual at this time; necessary details will be provided when formal proposals are requested, and it will be up to the vendor to generate the detailed drawings and STEP files for their designs.

Participation in this RFI does not commit FFDG or the United States Government to pay any costs incurred in the preparation or submission of a response, nor does it imply any promises or preference in the award of any future subcontract. All interested parties will be included in the bidders list for any subsequent

Request for Proposal (RFP).

We appreciate your interest in this requirement and look forward to hearing from you.
