About this opportunity
Brookhaven Science Associates (operator of Brookhaven National Laboratory on behalf of the Department of Energy Office of Science) seeks integration of a Low-Temperature Scanning Probe Microscope into its existing multiprobe UHV Surface Analysis System, with quotations due June 23 and questions due June 8. This is a full and open competition, Firm Fixed Price solicitation.
Place of performance is Upton, New York. The scope includes design and fabrication of a custom UHV SPM chamber, delivery of a new SPM scanner, sample stage with seven electrical contacts, removable magnetic field assembly, internal electronics, wiring and cabling, on-site installation within an existing cryostat, and atomic-resolution performance testing on Au(111) crystal or graphite surfaces for both STM and AFM modes. Delivery is anticipated 18 weeks after receipt of order, with FOB Destination and freight prepaid.
Offerors must demonstrate previous experience fabricating, installing, and testing low-temperature STM/qPlus AFM systems of comparable complexity, with references for at least three successfully delivered systems. Offerors must hold ISO 9001 certification or equivalent Quality Assurance program covering design, manufacture, installation, and testing, including custom STM/AFM chamber fabrication. A U.S.-based instrument service engineer network capable of providing maintenance and repair services during and after the warranty period is required. All SPM cabling must be compatible with existing Scienta Omicron MATRIX SPM controller hardware.
NAICS code is 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing); 1,000-employee size standard applies. BSA is procuring the Integration of a Low-Temperature SPM into a Multiprobe UHV Surface Analysis System. The requirement form and/or function supports the design and development of a lowtemperature scanning probe microscope (LT-SPM) and its integration into the existing multiprobe system without compromising or sacrificing any original system functionality. The LT-SPM will include a new SPM scanner, a sample stage with seven additional electrical contacts, a removable magnetic field assembly, required internal electronics, and all necessary wiring and cabling, while utilizing an existing cryostat previously purchased from the same Supplier for a prior LT-STM system. All SPM cabling will be compatible with the existing Scienta Omicron MATRIX SPM controller. In addition, A UHV SPM chamber will be designed and built by the Supplier in close collaboration with CFN staff to ensure full compatibility with the existing multiprobe system, enabling smooth sample and STM tip transfer between chambers and reliable SPM operation under UHV conditions. The Supplier will install all new components within the cryostat at CFN, including internal electronics, wiring, and cabling, and will perform system performance and quality tests on an Au(111) crystal or graphite surface to demonstrate atomic resolution for both STM and AFM.
