About this opportunity

The University of California, on behalf of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), a component of the Department of Energy, is conducting market research through this Request for Information (RFI) to identify qualified sources for the production and integration of Hard Bend (HBEND) Mechanical Systems and Magnet components for the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Upgrade Project. Potential contractors must demonstrate expertise in precision mechanical fabrication, magnet assembly, electromechanical integration, and the ability to meet stringent tolerance and alignment requirements. The procurement is divided into two distinct work packages: Work Package 1 focuses on producing eight mechanical systems including functional testing of drive actuators, while Work Package 2 encompasses magnetic system integration, system wiring, and controls checkout. LBNL seeks suppliers capable of complex permanent magnet dipole bending magnet fabrication, utilizing cobalt iron poles, NdFeB permanent magnets, and four-actuator drive systems. Responses to this RFI are due by November 5, 2025, and should be submitted via email to mggrausz@lbl.gov, with an anticipated formal RFP and award expected in February-March 2026.

This pre-solicitation notice carries no set-aside designation and does not identify any incumbent contractors or current suppliers. The estimated total contract value ranges from $1.2 million to $1.6 million for the complete scope of work. Under the proposed timeline, Work Package 1 shipments are expected five months following award, while Work Package 2's first article magnet shipment is anticipated seven months after award, with subsequent production at a rate of two magnets per month thereafter. The HBEND magnet represents a complex permanent magnet dipole bending magnet with adjustable magnetic field strength, requiring sophisticated engineering and manufacturing capabilities from the selected contractor. This RFI represents an early opportunity for interested vendors to position themselves for the formal competitive solicitation process anticipated in early 2026.
