About this opportunity
Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC, operating Brookhaven National Laboratory under a prime contract with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, is conducting a sources sought notice for magnet collar laminations required for the B1pF prototype collaring assembly in the interaction region of the Electron-Ion Collider. The procurement involves manufacturing precision-machined collar components from high-strength austenitic stainless steel (Nitronic-40 or 21-6-9 type) with specific dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements. Interested suppliers must demonstrate in-house manufacturing capabilities without subcontracting, provide evidence of similar past experience, and confirm their ability to work with the specialized materials and tight tolerances required. The evaluation will focus on the company's direct manufacturing capabilities, relevant experience with similar precision machining work, estimated lead times, and whether the work falls under Service Contract Act requirements. Responses to this sources sought notice are due by October 16, 2025, and interested parties can request additional technical files including step files for the machining drawings.
This opportunity does not include any set-aside designations and no current contractors or incumbents are identified in the notice. The procurement involves substantial quantities including 13,512 center collars, 406 non-lead end collars, 554 lead end collars, and various end collar configurations with specific delivery schedules requiring first article submissions by calendar week 6 after contract award and initial deliveries by weeks 13-16. The components require specialized 10% minimum cold reduced 21-6-9 high-strength austenitic steel to be supplied by Brookhaven Science Associates, with finished parts requiring tumbling to remove sharp edges and freedom from foreign matter, oil, grease, and metal particles. Individual part weights range from 1.75 to 2.75 pounds depending on the specific collar configuration, and the manufacturing requires adherence to strict quality assurance standards with detailed documentation and inspection protocols. The timeline extends from prototype development through production delivery phases, with BSA maintaining oversight and approval rights throughout the manufacturing process.
