About this opportunity
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), a civilian agency under the Department of Energy, is seeking to procure two solid-state pulsed RF High Power Amplifiers (HPAs)—one operating at approximately 125 MHz and one at approximately 500 MHz—each capable of delivering 25 kW peak power to replace existing tube-based Sub-Harmonic Buncher (SHB) amplifier systems. Interested vendors must complete the attached specification requirements Excel sheet, provide relevant technical documentation and drawings, submit examples of similar HPAs currently in operation (particularly in accelerator laboratory environments), provide a budgetary quotation, and outline an estimated delivery schedule. Key technical requirements include power stability of less than 1% short-term and 2% long-term, phase stability specifications, and efficiency exceeding 70%, with vendors required to provide a three-year comprehensive on-site warranty upon completion. The evaluation will be based on technical merit, vendor experience with comparable systems, proposed design features, value engineering considerations, cost, and delivery timeline. The Request for Information (RFI) response deadline is November 5, 2025, and this pre-solicitation notice was posted on October 17, 2025; importantly, this is an RFI for information gathering purposes only, with no guarantee of contract award or reimbursement for response costs.
This procurement carries no set-aside designation and does not identify any current incumbent contractors. While no specific award value is disclosed in the pre-solicitation notice, vendors should anticipate providing comprehensive budgetary quotations for both HPA units as part of their response. The contract will require successful vendors to complete multiple evaluation phases including a Final Design Review, Factory Acceptance Tests, and Site Acceptance Tests before delivery. The procurement seeks two units total, with the government expressing a goal to award the contract as soon as possible following the RFI evaluation period. Responses must be submitted electronically to AMathias@lbl.gov, and respondents should note that proprietary or confidential information should not be included as responses may be publicly disclosed. This opportunity is classified under NAICS 334220 (Radio and Television Broadcasting and Wireless Communications Equipment Manufacturing) and PSC 5996 (Amplifiers).
Notice text
LBNL plans to procure two (2) units of 25 kW (peak) pulsed RF solid-state (LDMOS/GaN-based) High Power Amplifiers (HPAs):
- One (1) unit operating at approximately 125 MHz
- One (1) unit operating at approximately 500 MHz
These new HPAs will replace the existing tube-based ALS Sub-Harmonic Buncher (SHB) pulsed RF amplifier systems. LBNL believes this opportunity may be of interest to bidders with relevant experience in this field.
Bidders are kindly requested to complete the attached SHB Pulsed RF HPA High-Level Specification Requirements (dated 12 Oct 2025) Excel sheet by filling in Columns D and E with their responses. In addition, please provide:
- Relevant technical documentation and drawings (if available)
- Examples of similar HPAs currently in operation (particularly in accelerator laboratories or comparable environments)
- An estimated budgetary quotation for two (2) HPA units
- An estimated delivery schedule
Bidders are also encouraged to include any additional technical insights, design features, or value engineering considerations that highlight the strengths and uniqueness of their pulsed RF HPA solutions.
