About this opportunity

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Eglin Air Force Base is conducting a Sources Sought/Request for Information to identify suppliers capable of providing a 137-actuator Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror (DM) system, with responses due by June 10, 2026. This is a market-research notice only; the Government is not soliciting quotes, making commitments, or obligating funds at this stage.

The deformable mirror will support real-time electro-optical/infrared sensing research for hypersonics testing within AFRL's Kinetic Kill Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (KHILS) Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The system must replicate aero-optical and aero-thermal image distortions during hardware-in-the-loop testing of hypersonic seeker sensors by introducing controllable wavefront aberrations into an infrared scene projector, with integration into a 6-degree-of-freedom flyout simulation representing hypersonic missile trajectories.

Firm technical requirements include: continuous membrane/MEMS architecture; minimum 137 actuators with minimum 12 across aperture; 4mm to 8mm aperture size; 5.5 micrometer actuator stroke; 450/650 microsecond response time; inter-actuator coupling less than 23 percent; zero hysteresis; sub-nanometer average step size; surface figure less than 20 nanometer RMS; window transmission greater than 95 percent across the 1.5–5.0 micrometer waveband; 2 kilohertz driver frame rate; 14-bit resolution; open-loop calibration capability; and delivery within 14 weeks or less. Interested parties should submit capability statements, relevant experience, item specifications, and qualifications by June 10, 2026. The MRD is attached.

SUBMISSION DETAILS: Interested parties should provide capabilities, qualification statements, and examples that demonstrate their ability to satisfy the requirements detailed in this request. Capability packages, at minimum, should address the following questions:

  1. Company Name, Address, CAGE Code, Point of Contact (POC) for technical and contractual issues to include name, position, telephone number, and e-mail address.
  2. Identification of whether the company is currently designated as a Small Business under the requirement’s NAICS code as defined in FAR Part 19.1 or a Small Business concern identified at FAR 19.000(a)(3): 8(a), HUBZone small business, service-disabled veteran-owned small business, EDWOSB, or WOSB status.
  3. Company description of relevant capability and experience to provide supplies/services in accordance with the minimum requirements listed in the attached MRD.
  4. Item specifications/descriptions/brochures being offered that meet requirements listed in attached MRD.
  5. Company's potential teammates/subcontractors (if required to ensure success).
  6. What, if any, risks or unknowns would hinder industry’s ability to meet the requirements?
  7. Do you have an active GSA contract/schedule with this item available for purchase? If so, please include contract number and a copy of contract/schedule.

Responses shall be sent via email to Jason Sav at jason.sav@us.af.mil, by Wednesday 10 June 2026 at 5:00 pm Eastern Time.
