About this file

This is a Minimum Requirements Document for a federal procurement by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Sensors Directorate (RWTSH), establishing specifications for a Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror (DM) system.

AFRL requires a 137-actuator MEMS-based continuous membrane deformable mirror to support research and development of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensing capabilities for hypersonics testing at the Kinetic Kill Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (KHILS) Laboratory. The system will simulate high-speed aero-optical and aero-thermal image distortions during real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing of hypersonic seeker sensors by introducing controllable wavefront aberrations into an infrared scene projector. The capability will replicate the effects of sensors operating through heated windows subject to plasma and aero-optical turbulence and will be integrated into a 6-degree-of-freedom flyout simulation representing hypersonic missile trajectories. Following sensor integration and testing, the completed testbed will be demonstrated to HITS program stakeholders and the Office of the Under Secretary of War (OUSW) customer, with planned technology transition to tri-service and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Department of War (DoW) test facilities.

Salient characteristics are firm requirements and include: continuous membrane/MEMS type; minimum 137 actuators with minimum 12 across aperture; aperture size of 4mm to 8mm; 5.5µm actuator physical stroke; 450/650 microseconds response time (10%-90% rise/fall); inter-actuator coupling less than 23%; zero hysteresis; sub-nanometer average step size; surface figure less than 20nm RMS; window transmission greater than 95% across the 1.5–5.0µm waveband; 2kHz driver frame rate; 14-bit resolution; open-loop calibration capability; driver electronics certificate documenting volatile and non-volatile memory management; and delivery within 14 weeks or less.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT

Title: Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror (DM)

Document Date: 1 June 2026

Scope:

AFRL/RWTSH requires a 137-actuator Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror

(DM) to support research and development of new Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensing capabilities for hypersonics at the KHILS Laboratory. Specifically, this DM will project aberrated wavefronts from an infrared scene projector to a hypersonic sensor-under-test during real-time, hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) missile engagement simulations.

Background:

The Kinetic Kill Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (KHILS) Laboratory requires a MEMS-based

Deformable Mirror (DM) to simulate high-speed aero-optical and aero-thermal image distortions for real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing of hypersonic seeker sensors. This is a time-sensitive requirement; the DM must be integrated into a newly developed HWIL testbed to support an urgent customer program.

Operationally, the DM will introduce controllable wavefront aberrations into an infrared scene projector, replicating the effects of a sensor looking through a heated window subject to plasma and aero-optical turbulence. These hypersonic effects will be incorporated into a real-time, 6-degree-of-freedom flyout simulation representing true hypersonic missile trajectories. The completed testbed, enabled by this DM, represents a novel capability for evaluating IR-guided hypersonic weapons. Following sensor integration and initial testing, the capability will be demonstrated to HITS program stakeholders and the OUSW customer, with subsequent technology transition planned for tri-service and Missile Defense Agency

(MDA) Department of War (DoW) test facilities.
