About this file

This document is the Geotechnical Information Report (GIR) Appendix G for the Rough River Dam Safety Modification Phase II - New Outlet Works and Cutoff Wall project. The GIR provides analyses of the downstream filter for the stilling basin abandonment, including calculations for particle migration and perviousness. The report indicates that multiple layers of graded materials, ranging from concrete sand to No. 23 stone, will be placed in the abandoned stilling basin to satisfy requirements for particle migration and perviousness. The related federal contract opportunity is a pre-solicitation for the construction of the Rough River Dam Safety Modification Phase II project, which will involve specialized site-specific equipment and capabilities to construct a new outlet works and cutoff wall. The contract will be a Firm Fixed Price with a best value tradeoff source selection, and will require HubZone and subcontracting plan participation. The anticipated solicitation release is in late November.

The various filter layers satisfy the requirements for particle migration and perviousness.

Check partical migration and perviousness for draped filter materials to be placed in abandoned stilling basin Multiple layers of graded material will be placed, ranging from C33 concrete sand at the base, followed by KYTC No. 57 stone which will be overlain by KYTC No. 23 Stone which will utimately be overlain by engineered fill (shot rock)

Gradations were all obtained from KYTC design specifications. Since the materials that are being compared are all sand and gravel with less than 15% fines, simplified calculations based on the d85 and d15 values of of the relevant base and filter materials were utilized.
