Interior Design

2.1 GENERAL PARAMETERS

2.1.1 General Criteria

• UFC 3-120-01 Design: Sign Standards, 12-12-2017

• UFC 3-120-10 Interior Design, 05-16-2018

• AFRL/RXOE Standards, May 2019

• Other applicable standards as outlined in previous sections

2.1.2 Purpose of Project

The intent of this project is to renovate existing space in Area B of Building 20655. Approximately

4200 SF of space is needed to support testing of hypersonic flight materials for the Air Force. This project includes addition of a clean room that will meet ISO 7-8 standards. The work will be completed in phases to ensure minimal down time for lab operations during construction.

Half of the labs shall remain functional while the other half are being improved. The phases are split between North and South; Phase 1 will be labs 188, 191, 193 and 195 (cleanroom) or the South labs. Phase 2 will be labs 183, 185, 197 and 199 or the North labs.

2.1.3 Desired Image of Building

The exterior envelope is not affected by the scope of work. Interior finish selections are based upon analysis of site, intended use, and incorporation of user and facility objectives as discussed and documented throughout the design process. Finishes meet WPAFB Facility Standards and coordinate with the look and feel of the existing building. Since this project is a renovation, some damage may occur to existing finishes. Efforts will be made to match any repaired finishes to the existing, or if a match is unavailable, replace with a comparable product.

Selections for flooring, paint, and ceiling tile have been provided by the base. These will be utilized to closely align with current facility standards. Finishes shall be low maintenance, easy to clean, and commercially standard.

2.1.4 Number of Personnel

Approximately 30 people will utilize the space between 0600 – 1800 daily. This number will be split evenly throughout the labs. Users will also have access to labs during evenings and weekends when necessary. Authorized users are full-time personnel at WPAFB. Visitors will fluctuate depending on operations.

2.1.5 Types of Activities, Equipment, and Vehicles

The enhanced Hypersonics Laboratory will provide a modernized, clean laboratory environment.

Upgrading the conventional lab space to include cleanroom areas provides new capabilities to enable the development of refractory ceramic composites. The revised layout will provide additional space for controlled atmosphere tube furnaces enabling ceramic fiber development and development of oxidation resistant material. Laminar flow booths and other new equipment will allow for necessary advanced material processing and testing of high temperature, lightweight materials for enhanced warfare capabilities. No vehicles are required.

2.1.6 Anticipated Life of Functions

The renovated labs should perform the duties outlined above throughout the lifespan of the building.

2.1.7 Type and Method of Construction

Permanent.

2.2 FUNCTIONAL AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

2.2.1 General Function

Upgrades to these research labs will allow for advanced materials research to meet the demand for the next generation of Hypersonic Aerial Vehicles. Access throughout the spaces will meet

ADA/ABA guidelines. Space allocation and occupancy breakdown will be as designated in the

Architectural design analysis.

2.2.2 Building-Related Interior Design

Quarry tile flooring was selected for most labs in Phase I for its durability and ability to withstand high temperatures. The tile has a slip-resistant finish for safety in wet conditions. A matching quarry tile base will be provided in all areas with quarry tile flooring. A medium-toned epoxy grout shall be utilized for cleanability. Phase II labs will have a decorative flake epoxy flooring with rubber base on all walls.

Clean room finishes shall meet ISO 7-8 standards. Epoxy painted CMU walls, scrubbable lay-in ceiling tiles, and a decorative flake epoxy flooring with rubber base are specified for the clean room. This room will also have stainless steel countertops in lieu of epoxy resin.

Walls and doors in both phases shall be painted the building standard colors as designated by the

AFRL/RXOE standards. Enamel paint is durable and washable; walls are finished in eggshell, and semi-gloss for door frames and trim. Epoxy paint has a gloss sheen to comply with ISO 7-8 standards. All flooring, wall base, paint, and casework finishes shall match the approved finishes provided in the AFRL/RXOE Standards guide dated May 2019.

New acoustic tile ceiling and suspension system will coordinate with the WPAFB Base Facility

Standard dated March 2016. The ceiling tile and grid shall be clean room approved throughout the lab space. Suspended acoustical ceiling follows base standard size of 2’x2’ or 2’x4’ and consists of smooth-texture panels that are washable, scrubbable, and mold and mildew, impact, scratch, and soil resistant. The panels provide a non-directional visual, reducing scrap and installation time.

Refer to the architectural narrative for information regarding casework and countertops.

2.2.3 Furniture-Related Interior Design

Furniture and equipment will be provided as part of the construction contract. Equipment will be as designated in the architectural package. Due to the nature of the labs and organization of the rooms, loose furniture shall be limited to task stools, wall-mounted storage units, and tables.

Furniture configuration is based upon analysis of site, intended use, and user input.

Stools shall meet ISO standards and have a solid polyurethane seat and back. Armless units have been specified to allow for ease of use with kneespace openings within the metal casework. Bench-height ergonomic task stools are adjustable to support the daily use of multiple occupants. Casters are appropriate for use on hard flooring. Furniture finishes shall coordinate with the interior finishes and existing furniture solutions in the building. All furniture is commercial grade construction.

Wall mounted stainless steel shelves are provided to house existing equipment. These units consist of stainless steel standards, shelf brackets, and wireless shelves to allow for air flow and easy access to the equipment. A stainless steel table has also been specified for use in the lab.

Wastebaskets and paper recycling bins will be provided by the users and are not included in this furniture package.

2.2.4 Signage

Signage shall comply with the WPAFB Base Facility Standards and UFC 3-120-01. Signage shall match the guidelines provided within the WPAFB Installation Facilities Standards and the

AFRL/RXOE standards. The Government will approve all signage graphics, text, and additional information prior to fabrication. Signs will be mounted to the inactive leaf of the double doors at the corridors. Where double doors are not present, the signs will be wall mounted. No building directories or motivational signage are required.

2.2.5 Accessibility for Handicapped Persons

Building lab renovations are designed and constructed to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) /

Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) standards.

2.2.6 Energy Conservation

See Energy Conservation Narrative.
