This drilling technique allows the installation of underground utilities without excavation, with an active trajectory control. The system involves the realization of a pilot hole which will form the seat for the plastic or metal pipe prepared by welding on the surface. The hole in the subsoil is accomplished by the action of a rotating cutter on the end of a tow rod.
The operative phases for installation of a pipeline using directional drilling are essentially:
Execution of pilot hole The drilling is done by inserting a series of rods in the soil, the first of which connected to a swivel head which allows it to be guided; the removal of the excess soil is by means of betonite slurries and various polymers which, passing through the perforation pipe and flowing out of the head, removes the soil making it flow back along the hole up to the starting hole in the form of mud.
Control of the drilling head is performed by way of guidance systems through radio waves (walk over) or magnetic (MGS – Magnetic Guidance System), by way of a special probe that is accommodated inside the head and able to provide depth, angle and direction on the horizontal plane at all times.
Reaming of the hole Once the pilot hole is realized, the drilling head is replaced with special reamers that are dragged back into the hole; they rotate with the motion transmitted by the rods which exert a cutting action which widens the hole and they are also assisted by the jets of mud.
Installation of the protection HDPE pipe After the reaming phase, the protective tube is hooked behind the reamer by means of a rotating joint, to prevent that the rotation is transmitted to the pipe itself, and is pulled backwards to the starting point.
Installation of the internal HDPE pipe The inner piping of a smaller diameter than that of the exterior protection piping is anchored to a traction head and inserted in the exterior protection piping using spacers.
d. Materials Protective HDPE pipe The penetrating pipe must be in HDPE as indicated in the technical specifications section 13a-8.2; for the pipe diameters, see the drawings. In addition to the indication in part 13a- 8.2, the pipe must be PE100 type RC (crack resistant).
A warning tape with a detectable band shall be provided with the pipe.
Internal HDPE piping See technical specifications 13a-8.2 for material characteristics. For diameters see the drawings.
Spacers The piping internal to the protective pipe must be fitted with suitable spacing collars, made entirely of HDPE, realized of modular elements with an interlocking system (without screws or clamping bolts) with fins of different heights, from 9 to 175 mm, to be chosed in function of the free space between the main pipe and the protective pipe and in function of any connecting joints (bell and groove) and/or protrusions on the main pipe.

e. Other requirements The pipeline crossing must be contained within a pipe of greater diameter called the protective pipe.
The work must be performed by skilled operators in possession of the “license” which qualifies as an “operator of complex machines” (recent legislation, and in particular the Presidential Decree 207/2010, as amended, as interpreted and published by the AVCP G.U.
no. 182 of 5 Aug 2011: “Special profiles of technical competence” (Art. 79, para 19 and 20).
The contractor who will perform this work must be qualified by the IATT Italian Association for Trenchless Technology.
f. Documentation to be produced at the end of the work A final report shall be prepared at the end of the activity that will contain:
• A description of the activities performed, instrumentation and operation procedures used;
• The documentation with a graphic representation of the crossings performed including the detailed plans of the crossings in 1:500 scale with the coordinates of the points of origin and destination, the longitudinal profile of the crossing in scale 1:500.
NOTE: In addition to above requirements, before starting the excavation, the Contractor must investigate with a metal detector furnished by himself the location of existing underground utility lines, e.g. electrical, communications, water, TV lines, or any other utility which may not be shown on the existing condition drawings, in order to prevent damaging or interrupting any existing utility. Investigation shall be done in the presence of the COR. Trial runs shall be done with the metal detector in the presence of the COR or his representative prior to the investigation. Investigation shall be done following COR approval of metal detector. The Contractor shall mark-up on a copy of the existing conditions the exact field location of the existing utility lines which are found during excavation. This copy shall then be submitted to the COR. Excavation work performed close to existing utility lines shall be done by hand within a 3 meter radius.

All forest trees shall be supplied in containers or clods of earth.
In the event that plants are supplied in containers, the roots shall be fully penetrated in the container. Plants must have been previously transplanted in the farm, as needed (the last transplant not dating back to more than two years earlier).
The works include clodding to be implemented by digging holes and pits of the appropriate size according to the size of the plant, with a width and depth at least twice and a half the diameter of the clod, and then bedding the species, manually finalizing the bedding, fertilizing the implantation with slow-release products, adding made land, closing the pits, arranging the soil properly and providing the first watering. The plants shall be positioned according to the indications contained in the project tables or given by the COR.
The investigation held to identify the number of trees that interfere with the light pole positioning and the underground communication system has permitted to identify the species that must be removed and are shown in the following table; the position of the trees to be removed is shown in the drawings.
