C. “CLARIFICATIONS” TO CONTRACTOR’S INQUIRIES FOLLOW:

THE USACE-CHICAGO DISTRICT PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING CLARIFICATIONS TO

CONTRACTOR’S INQUIRIES VIA THIS AMENDMENT NO. 0003

--NOTE: THE RESPONSES (CLARIFICATIONS) ARE PROVIDED IN RED TEXT

1. The utility conduits that are shown – are we furnishing and installing the 12KV cable in this conduit or is ComEd?

If we are installing that cable can you clarify what we are pulling because we cannot find it in the drawings. 12kV cable to be installed by ComEd. Please refer to specification section 33 71 02, paragraph 1.2 'Installation of 12.47kV cable through conduit by ComEd...'

a. The drawings call for us re-feeding the power and controls for the gate from the source, can you please clarify where the source is located for these cables and what the cables are?

Re-feed cable as per Note 8, Sheet ES-102.

b. The are a couple of camera towers that are being relocated to the north and is to be re-fed back to the source, can you please clarify where this is?

Verify source in the field, see Note 4, Sheet ED-101.

2. Specification section 31 32 23 paragraph 3.3.5 “Grout Mix” states a sand and Portland cement- based consolidation grout containing some combination of viscosity modifiers, fulisifiers, and other admixtures having an average slump of eight inches plus/minus .5 inches” Based on this statement we have the following questions:

a. Can the slump of the grout be increased above 8” to allow for better pumpability?

b. Are viscosity modifiers, fulisifiers and or other admixtures required to be part of the contractors mix design?

Based on the specification 31 32 23, paragraph 3.3.5, slump can be increased 0.5”. The specs also covers requirements for modifiers, and other admixtures. Bid as specified.

4. Additionally, please provide geotechnical reports for sheet pile installation.

Provided with amendment #2.

5. What are the depths of excavation for the tie-in points for the municipal and sanitary?

Refer to Sheet V002 to see notes about the sewer and water tie-ins.

6. Where are the electric tie-in point for the heat trace?

Refer to Sheet V002 to see notes about the sewer and water tie-ins.

7. In reference to the parking lot excavation for the proposed tie rods:

Sheet CS302 Note 1. States “Area to be excavated and backfilled with the same material”

Sheet SS-501 Note 1. States “Any soil excavated in the parking lot for installation of the tie rods…shall be disposed of offsite

What if the intent of pay item 0007AB - Excavate & Backfill For Tie-Rods? Are we to haul the material off and import stone, or stockpile and reuse the excavated material?

Bid as specified.

8. The cross sections in the plan sheets CS-303, CS-304 and CS-305 clearly show the approximate existing A-stone elevations and also the new tow stone elevations and slope in front of the new sheet pile wall. Per the quantities taken off of cross sections there will be a surplus of excavated A-stone. Is it the intent of the USACE for the contractor to place all of the excavated material in front of and behind the new sheet pile wall? If this is the case, is the “new toe stone” proposed line on these cross sections incorrect? How does the USACE intend on checking permanent grade during the backfill of this new toe stone? Will the contractor be able to place all of the surplus excavated material, not placed behind the sheet pile wall, in front of (on the lake side) the new sheet pile wall?

Bid as specified. Since the quantities depend on how much material will be excavated during toe clearing, Current contract does not specify removal off site any stone recovered when clearing the drive line. Specs section 35 31

19.45 03 para 2.3.2 says that existing granite “Red Stone” on site meets the requirements of this contract for A- Stone. Sheet CS502 note 2 says, the existing toe stone shall be filled up to 1 ft below new tie-rods. Stone removed during clearing the drive line, based on the specification Section 35 31 20.00 03 can be used as a Toe Berm Stone as well.

Electrical Site Plan – Demolition Sheet ED-104 Note 14 states to install (2) 5” conduit. Should this conduit be GS PVC Coated? Are these (2) 5” conduits in addition to the (8) 5” shown on Sheets ES-104 through ES-106? If they are for temporary use, will they be required to be removed after the new conduits are installed?

Bid as specified.
