About this file

This file package includes specifications for dynamic pile testing services required for the Red River Structure portion of the Fargo Moorhead Metropolitan Flood Risk Management Project. Dynamic pile testing will be performed on test and production piles to provide data on strain, force, acceleration, velocity or displacement under impact force. A minimum of fourteen tests will be conducted for the control structure foundation slab and stilling basin, with additional tests required for other project elements. Pile testing must be done in accordance with ASTM D4945 and detailed reporting requirements, including signal matching analyses of initial driving and restrike data. A minimum of two strain transducers and two accelerometers must be attached to each test pile. The impact force applied during dynamic testing shall be applied axially and concentrically with the pile. The Contractor shall take measurements in accordance with ASTM D4945 including but not limited to recording the number of impacts for a specific penetration; record the drop of the ram or ram travel length, if applicable; for hydraulic hammers, record the kinetic energy from the hammer readout when available; record the number of blows per minute delivered by the hammer; and take, record, and display a series of force and velocity measurements. The Contractor shall compare the force and the product of velocity and impedance at the moment of impact as stated in SUBMITTALS and in accordance with ASTM D4945 for data quality checks.

3.1.1.1 Frequency of Testing Production Piles

Fourteen tests shall be taken for the foundation slab of the Control Structure. The first test shall be performed on one of the first 15 piles driven. Subsequent tests shall be between performed after an additional 40 to 60 piles have been driven since the previous test. Nine of the tests shall be completed on the vertical piles and five tests shall be completed on batter piles.

Twelve tests shall be taken for the Approach Apron. The first test shall be performed on one of the first 15 piles driven. If the driving program stops for more than 6 weeks the first two production piles will be monitored with PDA during installation to assess hammer performance and driving criteria. A stop in driving is defined as the period of time between driving at the Red River site the last pile of a specific pile type (e.g., HP 14x73, HP 1x89, HP 14x102) from the ground surface to its termination depth with a specific pile driving hammer. If the specific hammer has not been previously used at the Red River site with the pile type, the two pile PDA calibration will need to be performed. This calibration shall be performed at no additional cost to the government.

Other piles can be driven during this time.

3.1.2.2 Frequency of Testing Production Piles During Restrikes

Restrikes on other production piles shall be performed at least 21 days after end of initial driving.

The Contractor shall select piles for restrike. Frequency of testing foundations slabs and walls shall be as follows.

The two strain transducers and two accelerometers shall be placed, diametrically opposed and on equal radial distances, at the same axial distance from the bottom or from the top of the pile so that the measurements compensate for bending of the pile. The transducers shall be attached at least 1 ½ pile diameters from the pile head. Care shall be taken to ensure that the apparatus is securely attached to the pile so that slippage is prevented. See ASTM D4945 for typical attachment lay-outs.

3.3 DYNAMIC TESTING REPORTS

The Contractor's geotechnical firm shall prepare a written report of the dynamic testing program on the test piles and results. This report shall include a discussion of the pile capacity results obtained from the dynamic testing and correlation between the pile dynamic test results and the EXISTING PILE TESTING DATA, provided by USACE. The report shall also discuss hammer and driving system performance, driving stress levels, pile integrity and soil characteristics such as soil damping coefficients and quake values.

3.3.2 Signal/Wave Matching Analyses

The Contractor shall perform signal/wave matching analyses of the dynamic pile testing data obtained from the "end of initial driving" and the "beginning of restrike" on all dynamically tested piles.
