SECTION 35 20 16.33 GREASED PINTLE BALL AND BUSHING Paragraph 3.2 PINTLE BUSHING MACHINING, which currently reads:
Machine the hemisphere surface to obtain the surface finish and tolerance required. Record and report the Pintle Bushing Hemisphere Centerpoint Location to the Contracting Officer for approval.
Mill two annular grooves into each pintle bushing hemisphere. The upper annular groove is the grease return channel. The lower annular groove is the O-ring seal recess.
Drill and tap the NPT threads specified on the drawing at the top of the bushing for grease connection.
As optional fabrication handling points, drill and tap the bores on top of each pintle bushing to accept a threaded eye bolt.
Machine the semicircular grease grooves last after resurfacing the hemispheres. Deburr and relieve all sharp edges on milled grooves.
"The aluminum bronze bushing is to be press fit into the pintle socket and secured by bolting to the socket. The amount of press fit of the bushing in the socket should be kept minimal" in accordance with USACE EM 110-2-2610. This is to "prevent any alteration of the machined fit between the bushing and pintle ball after assembly." The outer pintle bushing diameter must be 1'- 6" +0.003/+0.001 after machining. The pintle socket inner diameter must be 1'-6" +0.001/-0.000.

SECTION 35 20 16.33 GREASED PINTLE BALL AND BUSHING, Paragraph 3.4.2 Welding of Steel Forgings, which currently reads:
Remove unsound material from the surfaces of steel forgings to be incorporated into welded connections by chipping, machining, air-arc gouging or grinding. Major connections designed for the transfer of stresses must not be welded if the temperature of the forging is lower than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Preheat forgings containing over 0.35 percent carbon or over 0.75 percent manganese to a temperature not to exceed 450 degrees Fahrenheit and accomplish welding while the forgings are maintained at a temperature above 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Welding will not be permitted on forgings containing carbon in excess of 0.45 percent, except when authorized in writing. Forgings requiring welded repairs after the first annealing and forgings involving welding fabrication must be stress-relieved annealed prior to receiving final machining unless otherwise permitted.

SECTION 35 20 16.33 GREASED PINTLE BALL AND BUSHING, which currently reads:
3.4.5 Inspection of Castings and Forgings
Perform radiographic inspections of all castings and forgings in accordance with this section and specification section 05 50 13 MISCELLANEOUS METAL FABRICATIONS. The castings and forgings are unacceptable if shown to have defects of greater severity than the applicable reference standards specified in specification section 05 50 13 MISCELLANEOUS METAL
FABRICATIONS.
Radiographic inspections must be performed by a registered radiographic interpreter. Submit copies of certificates showing evidence of qualifications or certifications for radiographic interpreter. Provide a registered radiographic interpretation report with films to the Contracting Officer for review and approval.
3.4.5.1 Bushings and Pintle Balls
The procedure for making, evaluating, and reporting the radiographic inspections must conform to the requirements of ASTM E 94. Each pintle bushing, ball and fabricated pintle component must have the following NDT testing performed.
a. Pintle ball: radiographic testing per ASTM E94/E94M, ASTM E1742/E1742M, ASTM E1030/E1030M, and ASTM E1032.
b. Pintle bushing: radiographic testing per ASTM E94/E94M, ASTM E1742/E1742M, ASTM E1030/E1030M, and ASTM E1032.
c. Other fabricated pintle components: magnetic particle testing in accordance with supplementary requirement S3.1 of ASTM A290/A290M. Other NDT methods are subject to Government approval
Only ANSI/ASNT CP-189, ASNT SNT-TC-1A, AIA/NAS NAS410 qualified personnel may perform radiographic NDT testing. Radiographic acceptance criteria for castings and forgings satisfies the minimum severity level requirements for a Grade I condition as defined by ASTM E1955.
Any cracks found are unacceptable and reason for immediate rejection. The castings are unacceptable if shown to have defects greater than the severity levels listed in the tables in section 05 50 13 MISCELLANEOUS METAL FABRICATIONS. Evaluate all relevant indications greater than 1/16 inch in length present on radiographic films against the specified acceptance criteria where the length of each indication (li) within an area of interest and along a continuous straight line oriented in the direction of interest are measured. If the distance between two indications is smaller in length than the length of the smaller indication, then both indications must be added and treated as a single indication to include the distance of both indications as well as the distance between the indications. The total indication length is obtained as the sum of all indication lengths on a straight line within the area of interest. The maximum total indication length (lim) on any such single straight line is used to assess acceptance of the casting being evaluated.
This maximum total indication length (lim) is divided by the feature length (Lf), where (Lf) equals 1-1/8 inches, to calculate the indication fraction F (F = lim / Lf). The value of indication fraction F must be acceptable for values less than a Level I F=0.1. Provide 7-day advance notice of the NDT testing and perform all testing in the presence of the Contracting Officer. If testing and certification is not performed in the presence of the Contracting Officer, the Government reserves the right to perform independent quality verification, at the expense of the Contractor, and the acceptable total indication length (lim) for the acceptable indication fraction Level will be increased by 1/16 inch for the calculation to account for reproducibility in the evaluation. The manufacturer must certify in writing that the inspection was performed in accordance with the requirements specified and found to meet or exceed the requirements of the specified inspection level.
3.5 Pintle Socket Casting
This section covers components to be furnished for Greased Pintle Balls and Greased Pintle Bushings. Fabricate the pintle socket casting in accordance with ASTM A148/A148M Grade 80-
50. See section 05 50 13 for information on the pintle casting sockets and nondestructive testing for all castings included in this contract.
Is now changed to read
3.4.5 Inspection of Castings and Forgings
After casting or forging is complete and prior to any machining, a radiographic or ultrasonic inspections must be performed on all castings and forgings and must be performed by a Certified ANSI/ASNT CP-189 Level II in Radiographic Testing (RT), Certified ANSI/ASNT CP-189 Level II in Ultrasonic Testing (UT), or Certified ANSI/ASNT CP-189 Level II in Penetrant Testing (PT) personnel. Submit copies of certificates showing evidence of qualifications or certifications.
Submit the Radiographic Testing Procedure or Ultrasonic Testing Procedure prior to inspection.
Once the inspection is complete, submit the Radiographic Test Report or Ultrasonic Test Report, and the Liquid Penetrant Test Report. All nondestructive testing reports must be submitted to the QA inspector prior to final acceptance.
Perform visual and radiographic or ultrasonic inspections of the bushings and pintle balls. Visual inspection and acceptance criteria in accordance with ANSI/MSS SP-55. Procedures for making, evaluating, and reporting ultrasonic inspections must be in accordance with ASTM A388.
