Repair or replace geotextile or plastic wrapping damaged as a result of storage or handling.

Do not expose geotextile to temperatures in excess of 160 Deg F or less than 32 Deg F unless recommended by the manufacturer.

Do not use hooks, tongs or other sharp instruments for handling geotextile. Do not lift rolls by use of cables or chains in contact with the geotextile. Do not drag geotextile along the ground.

2.3 MANUFACTURER QUALITY CONTROL SAMPLING AND TESTING

The Manufacturer is responsible for establishing and maintaining a quality control program to assure compliance with the requirements of the specification. Documentation describing the quality control program shall

SECTION 31 05 19 Page 5 be made available upon request. Perform manufacturing quality control sampling and testing in accordance with the manufacturer's approved quality control manual. As a minimum, geotextiles shall be randomly sampled for testing in accordance with ASTM D4354, Procedure A.

Acceptance of geotextile shall be in accordance with ASTM D4759. Tests not meeting the specified requirements will result in the rejection of applicable rolls.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE SAMPLES AND TESTS

3.1.1 Quality Assurance Samples

Provide assistance to the Contracting Officer in the collection of quality assurance samples. Collect samples upon delivery to the site for quality assurance testing at a frequency of one per 100,000 square feet. Identify samples with a waterproof marker by manufacturer's name, product identification, lot number, roll number, and machine direction. The date and a unique sample number shall also be noted on the sample. Discard the outer layer of the geotextile roll prior to sampling a roll. Samples shall then be collected by cutting the full-width of the geotextile sheet a minimum of 3 feet long in the machine direction. Rolls which are sampled shall be immediately resealed in their protective covering.

3.1.2 Quality Assurance Tests

The Contractor shall provide quality assurance samples to a USACE validated laboratory. Samples will be tested to verify that geotextile meets the requirements specified. Test method ASTM D4355/D4355M shall not be performed on the collected samples. Geotextile product acceptance shall be based on ASTM D4759. Tests not meeting the specified requirements will result in the rejection of applicable rolls.

3.2 PREPARATION

Construct the surface underlying the geotextile as required in Section

35 31 19 RIPRAP SYSTEM.

3.3 INSTALLATION

Notify the Contracting Officer a minimum of 48 hours prior to installation of geotextile. Install geotextile in accordance with manufacturer's written recommendations and the approved installation plan and the layout plan. Contractor may need to use divers to ensure the surface preparation is performed as required. If divers are required, the Contractor shall submit a Dive Operations Plan as required in EM 385-1-1, and as part of the Accident Prevention Plan (APP). The Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) shall also include diving operations. Both APP and AHA are required in Section 01 35 26 GOVERNMENTAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS.

No equipment will be permitted to traffic in direct contact with the geotextile.

Lay geotextile smooth so as to be free of tensile stresses, folds, and wrinkles.

Use adequate ballast (e.g. sand bags) to prevent uplift by wind.

SECTION 31 05 19 Page 6

Do not use staples or pins to hold the geotextile in place.

Do not leave geotextile uncovered for more than 7 days.

Anchor geotextile and backfill anchor trenches. The Contractor can secure submerged edges of geotextile through staking or weighting in lieu of use of a key trench. Methods used must be consistent with the work plan.

Protect geotextile from clogging, tears and other damage during installation. Damaged geotextile shall be repaird per the manufacturer's requirments at not additional cost to the Government.

3.3.1 Overlaps

Continuously overlap panels a minimum of 24 inches at all longitudinal and transverse joints.

Install geotextile vertically from the top of slopes to the bottom with the upstream geotextile panel overlapping the downstream panel by at least 24 inches (minimum). On horizontal seams the upper panel will overlap the lower panel by at least 24 inches. All geotextile placed in the wet shall have a minimum overlap of 36 inches. If approved, sewn seams may be used instead of overlapped seams.

3.3.2 Seam Construction

Sew seams continuously using an SSa flat seam with one row of a two-thread 401 chain stitch unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer.

Minimum distance from the geotextile edge to the stitch line nearest to that edge: 2 IN unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer.

Tie off thread at the end of each seam to prevent unraveling.

Construct seams on the top side of the geotextile to allow inspection.

Sew skipped stitches or discontinuities with an extra line of stitching with 18 IN of overlap.

For seams that are field sewn, the seams shall be sewn using the same equipment and procedures as will be used for the production seams.

For field and factory seams which are sewn, provide ad least a 2-meter sample of sewn seam before the geotextile is installed. If seams are sewn in both the machine and cross section machine direction, provide samples of seams from both directions. Provide Quality Assurance seam samples to the Government at the request of the Contracting Officer.

Seam strength shall meet the minimum requirements specified in Table 1 above.

3.3.3 Geotextile Repair

Place a patch of the same type of geotextile which extends a minimum of 24 inches beyond the edge of the damage or defect.

Fasten patches continuously using a sewn seam or other approved method.

Align machine direction of the patch with the machine direction of the

SECTION 31 05 19 Page 7 geotextile being repaired.

Replace geotextile which cannot be repaired.

3.4 COVERING

Do not cover the geotextile prior to inspection and approval by the Contracting Officer. The Contractor's QC shall inspect, approve and document approved areas prior to covering subgrade with geotextile.

Documentation shall be provided with the QC daily report. Place bedding, riprap, or cover soil in a manner that prevents soil from entering the geotextile overlap zone, prevents tensile stress from being mobilized in the geotextile, and prevents wrinkles from folding over onto themselves.

On side slopes, soil backfill shall be placed from the bottom of the slope upward. Cover materials shall not be dropped onto the geotextile from a height greater than 3 feet. No equipment shall be operated directly on top of the geotextile without approval of the Contracting Officer. Use equipment with ground pressures less than 7 psi to place the first lift over the geotextile. A minimum of 10 inches of soil shall be maintained between full scale construction equipment and the geotextile. Cover soil material type, compaction, and testing requirements shall be as specified for embankment fill in Section 31 00 00 EARTHWORK. Equipment placing cover soil shall not stop abruptly, make sharp turns, spin their wheels, or travel at speeds exceeding 5 miles per hour. Geotextile damaged due to cover placement, spreading equipment, or spreading or compaction procedures, shall be replaced a the expense of the Contractor.
