About this file
This modification amends a solicitation to incorporate revised specifications for miter gate machinery gear components for four locks on the Illinois Waterway. The Department of the Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Rock Island seeks fabricated miter gate machinery gear components including a crank pinion gear, crank gear, and other open spur gears. The crank pinion gear must be fabricated from alloy steel and induction hardened. The crank gear can be either fabricated or cast, and must be through hardened. All gears must meet specified hardness values and backlash tolerances. The modification replaces in full a section of the original specifications regarding material and hardness requirements for the gears.

2.4 CRANK PINION SHAFT AND CRANK PIN
Provide shafts and pins to match dimensions as indicated and of forged AISI 4340 alloy steel. Quench and temper shaft to produce final hardness of
360-388 BHN.
2.5 OPEN SPUR GEARS
2.5.1 Gearing
Make spur gearing from high strength alloy steel, hardened with subsequent quenching, and tempered to produce a through hardened gear. Grind the gears after gear cutting to achieve a minimum ANSI/AGMA Quality Q8 in accordance with AGMA 2000-A88 or equivalent accuracy in accordance with ANSI/AGMA 1328-1-B14. Certified material test results for the crank gear, crank gear pinion, and crank gear pinion shaft are required.
The overall dimensions and configurations for spur gears and mating shafts, as indicated. Manufacturer gears to achieve specified and supplied as match marked sets. Factory test all gears in accordance with paragraph "SHOP QUALITY ASSURANCE." Provide spur gear teeth of the involute form with pressure angle as indicated. Provide spur gears as specified for backlash and gear tooth contact area requirements. Measure the gear backlash in unloaded conditions with one of the mating gears secured and the other gear manually rotated to obtain the backlash measurements. Use dial indicators or feeler gauges to collect backlash measurements. Provide gears with backlash of between 0.025 and 0.045 inch.
2.5.1.1 Crank Pinion Gear
Fabricate from UNS G43400 alloy steel, quench and temper gear to provide core hardness of 300-340 BHN and induction harden to provide full form (tooth and root) hardness of 50-55 Rockwell C. Make keys of UNS G43400 keystock. Fabricate pinion gear with a pitch diameter of 16 inches.
2.5.1.2 Crank Gear
Fabricate or cast construct to the overall dimensions and configurations of the crank gear. Quench and temper to provide through hardened gear to 300-340 BHN. Teeth profile to be standard 14-1/2 degree full depth involute with a diametral pitch of 1 and tooth width of 1.5708 inches. End relieve the ends of the pinion teeth to prevent end loading. Crown gear teeth as indicated. Machine the inside bore of the gear to provide the indicated fit with pinion shaft. Verify machining dimensions to ensure proper mounting. Scribe the pitch line, and two indexing lines offset 1/8-inch to each side, on the top of the gear teeth of all mated gears to aid in installation alignment.
2.5.1.2.1 Fabricated Crank Gear
Fabricate the rim, hub and pin socket of the crank gear of UNS G41300 or UNS G43400 with minimum yield strength of 124 ksi. Fabricate spokes and other structural supports from ASTM A36/A36M or ASTM A572/A572M Grade 50.
Design welded connections for 100 year fatigue life presuming 12 lockages per day. Use complete joint penetration groove welds for all welded joints
