PART 1 GENERAL

The publications listed below form a part of this specification to the extent referenced. The publications are referred to in the text by basic designation only.

AASHTO T 335 (2009) Standard Method of Test for Determining the Percentage of Fracture in Coarse Aggregate

1.2 SUBMITTALS

Government approval is required for submittals with a "G" designation;

submittals not having a "G" designation are for information only. When used, a designation following the "G" designation identifies the office that will review the submittal for the Government. The following shall be submitted in accordance with Section 01 33 00 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES:

Where installation procedures or any part thereof are required to be in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer of the material being installed, printed copies of these recommendations shall be furnished to the Contracting Officer prior to installation.

1.3 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

1.3.1 Delivery and Storage

Materials delivered to site shall be inspected for damage, unleaded, and stored with a minimum of handling. Materials shall not be stored directly on the ground. The inside of pipes and fittings shall be kept free of dirt and exposure to the direct sunlight over extended periods.

1.3.2 Handling

Materials shall be handled in such a manner as to insure delivery to the trench in sound, undamaged condition.

1.4 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

Installed leaching system with 36 inches minimum backfill cover shall meet H-20 load rating under AASHTO-01

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 Subsurface Drainage (Leaching) Chamber

The subsurface drainage chamber (leaching chamber), is system to receive effluent and allow it to drain or infiltrate into the surrounding soil.

2.1.1 Provide standard manufactured units for this purpose formed of high density molded polyethylene conforming to the following:

a. Units shall be arch shaped, with open-bottom.

b. Nominal size of individual units shall be 51 inches width (min.) by 30 inches (min.) depth in standard manufacturers lengths that shall be interlocked to provide the overall length shown on plans.

c. Each unit shall have a minimum of 0.32 square feet of sidewall opening per linear 12 inches. Openings shall be 0.02 inch wide.

d. Each unit shall have a minimum bearing footprint of 1.5 to 2.0 square feet.

e. Units shall include standard end plates with distribution pipe inlets. Distribution pipe inlets shall be a minimum of 4 inch diameter pipe or as indicated on the plans.

f. Each unit shall be designed with interlocking joints for field installation.

g. Polyethylene used in molded units shall have a minimum density of 6 pcf.

2.2 Permeable Ballast

Ballast shall consist of crushed, partially crushed, or naturally occurring granular material from approved sources manufactured in accordance with the provisions of Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Specification, Chapter 3, Section 3-01 Production From Quarry and Pit Sites. The material from which ballast is to be manufactured shall meet the following test requirements:

Los Angeles Wear, 500 Rev 40 percent max.

Degradation Factor 15 min.

Ballast shall meet the following requirements for grading and quality when placed in hauling vehicles for delivery to the roadway or during manufacture and placement into a temporary stockpile. The exact point of acceptance will be determined by the Engineer.

All percentages are by weight.

The portion of ballast retained on No. 4 sieve shall not contain more than

0.2 percent wood waste.

The fracture requirement shall be at least one fractured face and will apply the combined aggregate retained on the No. 4 sieve in accordance with FOP for AASHTO T 335 .

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

3.1.1 Drainage (Leaching) Chambers

Excavation of trenches and backfilling for the subsurface drainage (leaching) chambers shall be in accordance with the applicable portion of Section 31 00 00 EARTHWORK and the installation of the subsurface (leaching) chambers shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations except provide 12 inches of drain gravel below and at the sidewalls of the chambers.
