Based on 2013 Dorm Design, footing bearing elevation must be at a minimum of 8’-0” below from top of the grade.
A geotechnical report is recommended in order to provide an efficient design for new footings of the addition, and for retrofit and rehabilitation of the existing building (Building 98). In the case if a geotechnical report is not available, a conservative approach shall be used based on governing building code.
A1010 STANDARD FOUNDATIONS
A1010.1 COLUMN FOUNDATIONS
To avoid difficulties in pouring concrete for new foundations on the permafrost building site, it is recommended to use precast concrete footing elements to support the new steel columns proposed to support the proposed building addition. Steel column bases shall be attached to supporting footings using steel anchor bolts.

All building structural systems and components shall comply with the requirements of the applicable codes, standards and criteria as well as industry standards and commonly accepted method of practice. The proposed building addition shall be limited to the middle part (multipurpose space and covered entry) of the existing dormitory building and shall extend for the full height as shown on the RFP
SECTION 01 10 10 Page 20 plans and sections. The superstructure of the middle part of the new addition shall match, as practically possible, the structural system of the existing building (i.e. steel moment frames and gabled roof).
Expansion joints need to be provided where the proposed addition is connected to the existing building. The proposed addition shall be enclosed using non-load bearing exterior walls to provide necessary fire rating of the egress. Covered entries shall consist of exterior steel stairs connecting the building’s first floor level to the grade and covered by a framed steel canopy.
C1002 STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
C1002.1 GRAVITY SYSTEM
The existing dormitory building utilizes steel framing as the primary load-carrying system to support the building’s gravity loads (i.e.
dead, live, snow). The new addition shall match the existing building by using steel frames to support gravity loads from added floors and steel roof. Typical floors shall be constructed of composite floor slabs supported by composite steel beams that span between steel columns. All beam to girder connections are to be of the shear-type while all beam/girder-to-column connections are to be of the moment-resisting type.
The contractor is responsible for the detailed design of the framing system, floor slabs and the metal roofing system. The contractor is responsible for providing sufficient documentation to verify that all performance requirements have been met, the design configuration matched and may have to provide added substrate support to adequately resist imposed loads.
C1002.2 LATERAL SYSTEM
The existing dormitory building utilizes ordinary moment resisting steel frames in both orthogonal directions to provide resistance to lateral loads. Floor slabs and roof deck serve as rigid diaphragms transferring lateral loads due to wind or earthquake effects to supporting frames at various levels along the building height. The new building addition shall be connected to the existing building at all floor and/or roof levels in a manner to accommodate an expansion joint. The addition shall also utilize ordinary moment resisting frames in both directions to provide lateral stability to the addition. An expansion joint is required at the interface of the new and existing structures.
SECTION 01 10 10 Page 21
C1010 FLOOR CONSTRUCTION
C1010.1 FLOOR STRUCTURAL FRAME
The proposed floor structural system for the new addition consists of floor metal decks supported by steel floor beams that span between steel columns. Floor slab construction is indicated by Section C1010.2 below. All floor beam-to-column connections in both directions are to be of the moment-resisting type to provide lateral stability.
C1010.2 FLOOR DECKS, SLABS, AND TOPPINGS
From the 2013 Dorm Design, the floor slab construction for the new addition consists of three layers of gypsum board (from top down: one ¾” gypsum board over two layers of ½” gypsum board.) on top of 2” rigid mineral fiber insulation with an additional layer of ½” gypsum board underneath of the rigid insulation. The whole gypsum board and rigid insulation assembly is supported by a combination of one 1 5/16” metal deck and one 6” metal deck. The 1 5/16” metal deck must be laid on top of 6” metal deck. In addition, the 1 5/16” metal deck must be laid in the direction perpendicular to the span direction of the 6” metal deck. The 6” metal deck must be able to span between support steel beams for support of design loads.
For slab in fill at openings of the existing stair well where existing stairs being removed, floor system shall match existing floor construction, i.e. 2” concrete reinforced with weld wire fabric over 4 ½” metal deck.
C1010.3 EXTERIOR STAIRS
Exterior stairs and landings shall be fabricated and constructed of galvanized structural steel rolled sections and plates. The stairs framing shall be supported by an independent foundation system.
C1020 ROOF CONSTRUCTION
C1020.1 ROOF STRUCTURAL FRAME
The proposed gabled roof structural system for the new addition consists of insulated metal panels supported by roof steel purlins spanning between roof steel beams and columns. The roof sloped profile shall be planned to fit perpendicularly to the existing building gabled roof. Roof purlin-to-beam connections are to be of the shear-type while purlin and/or beam-to-column connections are of the moment-resisting type to provide lateral stability in addition to improved gravity load carrying capacity.
SECTION 01 10 10 Page 22
The new gabled roof of the addition shall have an expansion joint at the interface of the existing building. The gable shall continue on to the existing building as an over-build. Existing metal roof sheathing shall be removed where required to make purlin connections.
C1020.2 ROOF DECKS, SLABS, AND SHEATHING
Roof construction for the new addition consists of insulated metal panels spanning between steel purlins. Selected roof panel depth and thickness should be adequate to provide required flexural strength and satisfy serviceability requirements. The insulated metal roof panel is designed to support all out-of-plane applied loads and resist lateral loads, acting as a diaphragm to collect and transfer lateral loads to the building frames. The insulated metal roof panels shall be designed to run perpendicular to roof slope and spans between roof purlins. A standing seam metal roof is assumed to be installed over the metal panel diaphragm to serve as an aesthetic element and weather protection material.
Access to the attic space shall be via existing fixed ladders, insulated access hatches and ladders at the stairwell landings located at each end of the building.
C1020.3 CANOPIES
Steel framed canopies shall be provided at the three (3) exterior stairs and one new stair constructed with the Optional addition.
Canopies shall be constructed of galvanized metal deck supported by shallow galvanized beams/tubes that shall be resting on steel posts on one side and framing into the building’s exterior cladding support.
Connections to the building shall be provided with thermal breaks.
