AMENDMENT 0006

Amendment #6 for W912DS-R-12-0014, Ballistic Evaluation Complex (BEC) Phase I & II, Picatinny Arsenal, NJ

Answers to Contractor Questions (For Informational Purposes Only)

Question 1:

Specification section 083953.2.2 defines Trolleys and Track Beam as the method with which to support the door weight. The track beam and trolleys are not shown anywhere in the drawings.

The orientation of a track beam and trolleys has inherent weakness for a blast resistant door in that both will be exposed to the blast effects. Also, it is impossible to run the track beam perpendicular to the hangar doors as intended as the track beam will intersect each of the hangar door top guides. The track beam cannot be discontinuous at the hangar doors, and the hangar door top guides cannot be discontinuous at the track beam. Please indicate how this is to be accomplished.

Response:

At each location the purpose of the sliding blast door is to protect the hangar door sections from overpressures/shockwaves when the hangar door sections are stored in the storage pocket. This requires the overhead tracks for the hangar door sections to be fabricated with a short gap along the length of travel that permits the blast door and hardware to pass through the hangar door tracks and close off the pocket completely. The width of the hangar door track gap is expected to be slightly larger than the thickness of the blast door and hardware. As each section of the hangar door is long enough in plan to accommodate numerous rollers at the head, no operational challenges are expected with regard to the hangar door design since multiple rollers of each door section will be on the overhead track at all times with no more than one roller passing over the gap at any instance. The drive linkage or festoons for the hanger doors would need to be located to accommodate the overhead track gap. With regard to the capacity of the blast door overhead track, the jambs of the blast door carry the blast loads while the blast door hanger track and floor track carry the door when being manually closed or opened. The floor tracks for the hangar and blast doors would be fabricated in to a machined plate where they cross recessed in to the floor slab permitting the slots to cross. The exposed hardware is to be designed, sized, and attached so as to resist repeated blast loading

within the elastic range while remaining operational for the life of the building. Subject to project requirements, the contractor may elect to submit alternate door configurations for consideration and coordination refinements during the submittal process.
