PART 1

GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

Adjust list below to suit Project.

1. Fertilizing.

2. Seeding.

3. Mulching.

4. Maintenance.

1.3 RELATED WORK

A. Section 02300 “Earthwork” for preparation of subsoil and placement of topsoil in preparation for the work of this Section.

1.4 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A. Comply with regulatory agencies for fertilizer and herbicide composition.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Provide seed mixtures in containers showing percentage of seed mix, year of production, net weight, date of packaging, and location of packaging.

1.6 WARRANTY

A. Provide warranty for turf areas under provisions of Division 1 Section “Contract Closeout.”

B. Provide full replacement warranty for turf for the maintenance period. Reseed dead or thin areas as specified, reseeded during allowable planting periods, with new warranty commencing on date of replacement.

1.7 MAINTENANCE DATA

A. Submit maintenance data for continuing Owner maintenance under provisions of Division 1 Section “Contract Closeout.”

B. Include maintenance instructions, cutting method and maximum grass height; types, application frequency, and recommended coverage of fertilizer.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver products to site under provisions of Division 1 Section “Material and Equipment.”

B. Store and protect products under provisions of Division 1 Section “Material and Equipment.”

C. Deliver grass seed mixture in sealed containers. Seed in damaged packaging is not acceptable.

D. Deliver fertilizer in waterproof bags showing weight, chemical analysis, and name of manufacturer.

1.9 JOB CONDITIONS

A. Planting is not permitted during the following conditions, unless otherwise approved:

1. Cold Weather: When air or ground temperature is less than 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Wet Weather: When ground is saturated.

3. Windy Weather: When wind velocity is greater than 30 miles per hour.

1.10 MAINTENANCE SERVICE

A. Maintain seeded areas for one full growing season after substantial compomletion.

B. Maintenance requirements are specified in 3.6.

PART 2

PRODUCTS

2.1 SEED MIXTURE

A. Seed Mixture

1. "Nugget" Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis “Nugget"): 50 percent.

2. Creeping Red Fescue (Festuca rubra "Arctared"): 40 percent.

3. Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum): 10 percent.

2.2 OTHER MATERIALS

A. Fertilizer: As required to conform to 3.2A.

B. Herbicides: Commercial type, conforming to applicable environmental regulations.

C. Water: Free of harmful minerals and contaminants.

PART 3

EXECUTION

3.1 INSPECTION

A. Verify that prepared surface is ready to receive the work of this Section.

3.2 FERTILIZING

A. Apply fertilizer in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, at a rate sufficient to bring the soil to the following minimum standard:

1. Nitrogen (N): 21 to 35 PPM.

2. Phosphorus (P): 11 to 20 PPM.

3. Potassium (K): 76 to 150 PPM.

B. Apply after smooth raking of topsoil and prior to roller compaction.

C. Do not apply fertilizer at same time or with same machine as will be used to apply seed.

D. Mix thoroughly into upper 2 inches topsoil.

E. Lightly water to aid the dissipation of fertilizer.

3.3 SEEDING

A. Apply seed at a rate of 4 pounds per 1000 square feet. evenly over all areas to be seeded. Rake in lightly. Do not seed area in excess of that which can be mulched on same day.

B. Planting Season: June 15 to September 1.

C. Roll seeded area with roller not exceeding 112 pounds.

D. Immediately following seeding and compacting, apply mulch to a thickness of 1/8 inches. Maintain clear of shrubs and trees.

E. Apply water with a fine spray immediately after each area has been mulched. Saturate to 4 inches of soil.

3.4 HYDROSEEDING

A. Apply seeded slurry at a rate of 4 pounds of seed per 1000 square feet evenly in all areas to be hydroseeded, with a hydraulic seeder. Do not hydroseed area in excess of that which can be mulched on same day.

B. Immediately following seeding, apply mulch to a thickness of 1/8-inch. Maintain clear of shrubs and trees.

C. Apply water with a fine spray immediately after each area has been mulched. Saturate to 4 inches of soil.

3.5 SEED PROTECTION

A. Identify seeded areas with minimum 4 foot height orange plastic fence around area periphery. Metal fence stakes to be minimum 6 feet in length driven a minimum of 24 inches into soil. Space stakes at 6-foot maximum intervals. Attach fencing securely to stakes at minimum three connections per stake.

3.6 MAINTENANCE

A. Seed Lawn

1. Mow grass at regular intervals to maintain at a maximum height of 2-1/2 inches. Do not cut more than 1/3 of grass blade at any one mowing.

2. Neatly trim edges and hand clip where necessary.

3. Immediately remove clippings after mowing and trimming.

4. Water lawn thoroughly to prevent grass and soil from drying out.

5. Roll surface to remove minor depressions or irregularities.

6. Control growth of weeds. Apply herbicides in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Remedy damage resulting from improper use of herbicides.

B. Immediately reseed areas that do not conform to standards for satisfactory stand of turf. Satisfactory stand of turf from the seeding operation for lawn areas is defined as a minimum of 300 grass plants per square foot, with no bare spots larger than 2 inches square, and with total area of bare spots not exceeding 2 percent of total seeded area.

C. Protect seeded areas with warning signs and orange plastic fencing.

D. Fertilize in accordance with maintenance instructions.
