The values listed are typical properties and are intended to be used as guidelines only not as specification limits. No guarantee or warranty is made by Modutank Inc.as to the manner of use. Handling and site conditions are beyond our control. Installation is to be done in accordance with industry standards.

Product Description SRP 20WW is produced from two sheets of virgin-grade high strength polyethylene film laminated over a webbed layer of 1000 denier polyester string bonded together with a third layer of molten polyethylene. The white outer layers contain thermal stabilizers and UV inhibitors to increase UV longevity and greatly improve resistance to the harsh outdoor elements. The scrim reinforcement layer works to greatly improve overall tear propagation of the material by giving the product reinforced strength in multi-axial direction across the product.

Product Use SRP 20WW is used in areas where there is a demand for high strength and tear resistance. This product performs exceptionally well in cover applications where there exist the risk of exposure to wind uplift and damage. The scrim reinforcement mitigates the chances of tear propagation more commonly seen in mono layer non-reinforced products.

MEMBRANE LINERS FOR MODUTANK INC. TANKS

Membrane liners are vital components in ModuTank systems and must be selected according to type and duration of the project.

For short-term applications of a month to as long as two years, 18 Mil and 20 Mil laminated Polyethylene are most often specified due to low-cost, rapid deployment, and availability in factory fabricated single sheets for tanks as large as 2,000,000 gallons.

However, due to the potential for puncture or other damage during transport or installation, 18 Mil and 20 Milliners in Polyethylene must be specified with caution.

With 18 Mil and 20 Mil laminated Polyethylene liners permanent repairs can be made with low-cost, readily available equipment, using a 110 volt power source. Special skills are not required.

Liners in 18 Mil and 20 Mil laminated Polyethylene provide satisfactory service in many applications where seepage due to small, unobserved puncture may be tolerated. Where type of contents does not allow for any seepage or where regulatory requirements are very strict, reinforced liners such as 36 Mil and 45 Mil reinforced Polypropylene (PPE) or 30 Mil XR-5 must be specified.

Liners in PPE and XR-5 are highly puncture and UV-resistant and can be used in long duration projects of ten years or more.

PPE and XR-5 liners are easily repaired in the field. Electric power is required to repair all of these materials.

Whenever feasible tanks should be filled with clean water to check for liner integrity before tank is placed into service.

ModuTank Inc. will repair or replace liners where the defect is due to deficiencies in material or shop fabrication.

Although every effort Is made to assure customer satisfaction, ModuTank Inc. disclaims all liability for any losses or damage resulting from deficiencies in any liner system.

CROSS FLOW MEDIA

AccuPac® Cross Flow Media is specifically designed for biological fixed film systems. Cross flow media provides a cost-effective method for reduction of organics (roughing and polishing), nitrification, denitrification, and anaerobic treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters. The modules are fabricated from rigid, non-flammable PVC sheets, which are UV-protected and resistant to rot, fungi, bacteria, acids, and alkalis commonly present in municipal wastewater.

CROSS FLOW

ADVANTAGE

Combining high surface area with maximum mixing/ redistribution points per unit volume of media, cross flow media facilitates superior process performance in a wide range of hydraulic wetting rates.

Each sheet in a module is completely corrugated at a 60° angle from the horizontal and assembled in a cross-corrugated pattern with adjacent sheets, creating a minimum 95% void-to-volume ratio.

This configuration provides continuous and uniform horizontal distribution of both air and water throughout the full media depth, enhancing contact between the wastewater and the media biofilm.

VARIED APPLICATIONS

AccuPac Cross Flow Media modules are excellent for both circular and rectangular systems with either rotary distributors or fixed nozzles:

• Trickling filters, bio-towers, nitrification towers; For new installations or replacement of existing media.

• Ideal replacement for rock, wood, or random media; Increases retention time and wastewater biomass contact; Improves wastewater distribution and ventilation.

• Excellent for submerged fixed-film systems in either aerobic or anaerobic modes; High mixing/ redistribution and open void area promotes air and liquid mixing without impeding flow.

DEDICATED BOND JOINTS

Brentwood’s patented manufacturing process produces dedicated recesses on the corrugated sheets which become bonding pads when solvent welding the sheets to form a module. This feature ensures:

• Precise and complete bonds between sheets at each of the multiple joints, from the edges throughout the entire self-supporting module.

• Pre-engineered number of mixing/redistribution points as the bonded joints become the mixing points for each pair of sheets.

• Uniform size openings and uniform module dimensions creating superior creep resistance and structural integrity.

Each module in the bottom layer is placed cantilevered across and at right angles to two supports (8 inch minimum support width on 24 inch centers*).

Installed modules are rotated 90° to the layers immediately below and above.

AccuPac Cross Flow Media modules are available in a wide variety of sizes: 12 or 24 in. heights; 12 or 24 in. widths; and 4, 6, 8, and 10 ft. lengths.

Oil/Water Separators Plastic parallel plate packs are designed to enhance the separation of oil from water through added horizontal surface area and by creating less turbulent flow. This coalescing media improves the use of conventional steel basin oil/water separators by providing improved effluent or by allowing higher flow rates of wastewater. Brentwood AccuPac™ Crossflow Media is an extremely cost-effective way to upgrade existing separators and decrease the required volume of newly designed oil/water separators.

THE PROBLEM: OILY WASTEWATER

Industrial pollutants in rainwater runoff and storm sewer overflow have seriously degraded the environment.

The EPA has issued the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Regulations for Storm Water Discharge (40 CFR 122) for industrial facilities discharging storm water. Industries such as transportation facilities have oil drippings and spills which pollute rainwater runoff and equipment washdown wastewater. These industrial facilities must find a way separate the oil, grease, and other pollutants out of wastestreams to meet federal, state, and local requirements.

Gross free oil in wastewater left untreated can harm downstream treatment equipment. Lubricating oils and machinery coolants can be separated out of water, not only to protect other equipment but also to recover and reuse these fluids, thereby creating significant cost savings.

Tramp oil in washwater or coolant reservoirs can be removed to extend the life of these fluids in a wide variety of applications such as metalworking mills and industrial parts washing.

The pollutants in wastestreams which represent the problem for oil/water separators include Free Oil, Oily-Coated Solids, Mechanical Dispersions, Emulsions, and Dissolved Oil.

• Free Oil will rise to the surface of the water, given time.

• Oily Solids will settle to the bottom of the water.

• Mechanical Dispersions are fine oil droplets spread throughout the water which do not easily separate out on their own.

• Emulsions are fine oil droplets which cannot be separated from water physically because of other chemicals in the water, such as soap.

• Dissolved Oil is no longer in droplet form so that physical removal is impossible.

Both emulsified and dissolved oils cannot be removed in physical oil/water separators.

THE SOLUTION: OIL/WATER SEPARATION

Free oil can be removed by gravity separation given proper quiescent flow conditions. Gravity oil/water separators exploit the differences in specific gravity between the fluids by providing adequate retention time for the less dense oil globules to rise to the surface of the water. The theory of this type of separation is based on the rise rate of oil droplets in the water and the surface-loading rate of the separator. The surface-loading rate is the ratio of the flow rate to the separator and the surface area of the separator.

If the oil globule rises towards the surface of the separator faster than the surface loading rate, the oil will reach the surface and can be skimmed off mechanically.

The required rise rate can be found using Stoke’s Law:

The design of oil-water separators should carefully consider these characteristics of the wastewater and the oil itself.

Additionally, the separator design should take into account the amount of settleable solids in the wastewater and other contaminants, such as surfactants, which might hinder the treat-ment of the system. Usually many of these characteristics must be assumed based on the type of facility generating the wastewater.

Where: Vt is the rise rate of the oil drop g is the acceleration due to gravity µ is the viscosity of the wastewater pw is the density of the wastewater po is the density of the oil, and D is the diameter of the oil droplet.

Vt = (g/18µ)(pw - po)D2

THE PARALLEL PLATE ADVANTAGE

Conventional Oil/Water Separators are simple rectangular channel tanks which provide nominal retention time to remove larger oil molecules. This type of equipment has only been found to remove free oil droplets with a diameter greater than or equal to 150 microns. These separators typically do not achieve effluent oil concentrations of less than 100 ppm because of the abundance of smaller oil droplets which are harder to remove. Ideal separators are those that have no turbulence, short circuiting, or eddies.

Parallel Plate Oil/Water Separators offer improved performance by increasing the horizontal surface area of the separator and creating less turbulent flow. Conventional channel units can often be retrofitted with parallel plates to either improve the wastewater effluent or allow for higher flow rates of wastewater. Separators with Parallel Plate Coalescing Media can allow flow rates up to three times that of conventional units. They can also remove free oil droplets with smaller diameters than conventional oil/water separators. Effluent from parallel plate separators is reported to have up to 60% less oil than conventional separators and the oil collected from these units contains less water.

Inlet OutletOil Removal

Settled Solids

In conventional rectangular oil/water separators, more separation (higher flowrate or better effluent) is accom-plished only by added vol-ume of the tank. Adding volume in an open-channel rectangular tank is the only way to create the necessary surface area for improved treatment. Since these tanks are traditionally manufac-tured from welded steel, increased volume translates to increased steel at a tremendous material cost.

Adding PVC parallel plate coalescing media is an inexpensive and easy way to increase treatment without adding volume to existing steel separators.

Coalescing Media Packs incorporate inclined channels which allow oil drops to collect on the underside of the plates and form larger globules which then rise toward the surface of the water. As demonstrated by Stoke’s Law, larger diameter drops of oil will rise to surface of the water faster. Additionally, these corrugated plates encourage solids material to settle faster and slide to the bottom of the separator. Sludge hoppers and similar solids collection systems are often incorporated into the design of the separator basin.

PARALLEL PLATE PACK CRITERIA

The direction of water flow is generally crossflow or downflow through the coalescing packs. According to API design recommendations (API Publication 421 Design and Operation of Oil/Water Separators), the typical range of spacing between the plates is .75 to 1.5 inches. However, spacings down to .25 inches have been used successfully. When using a more dense plate pack the concern arises for plugging of the oil and solids inside the media. To correct this problem the plate packs can be removed and cleaned with high pressure water.

While packs with higher amounts of surface area can theoretically remove oil more efficiently, they may require more frequent maintenance. The angle of the plates should be somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees. Plate packs with 60 degree angles should be used if significant solids accumulation in the separator is anticipated.

Crossflow corrugated media forces the water to keep chang-ing directions, which helps the smaller oil droplets impinge on the plate surface. While quiescent flow is important to liquid/liquid separation, the slight turbulence in the media will help the oil coalesce.

COALESCING MEDIA MATERIALS

Coalescing media can be inexpensively made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) corrugated sheets. PVC is an oleophilic (oil-loving) material which attracts the smaller oil droplets to its surface where they coalesce to form larger drops which slide up the to the surface of the media and break free, rising quickly to the oily surface of the water. PVC is chemically inert to most oils and contaminants, and can be used in wastewater at moderate temperatures. For higher temperature wastewater, specially formulated PVC can be used, as well as polypropylene. Polypropylene is also very oleophilic and can be used up to 185°, but it is significantly more expensive than PVC. For much higher wastewater temperatures, stainless steel plate packs are commercially available at costs at least an order of magnitude higher.

PARALLEL PLATE SEPARATOR DESIGN

The design of parallel plate separators can be done using a derivation of Stoke’s Law, which relates the oil droplet’s rise rate to the surface loading rate. For the design of parallel plate oil/water separators where details of the wastewater characteristics are not known, a oil globule diameter of 60 microns can be safely assumed. The following equation assumes an oil globule diameter of 60 microns:

The equation includes the specific gravity of both the oil and the water, which simply refers to the density of each material.

The inclusion of this parameter in the equation highlights its importance, since the difference in the density of oil from water is what causes it to separate out. Any material, such as dirt and sand, which is more dense than water will sink, and any mate-rial less dense than water, such as oil, will float and rise through the water to be skimmed off the top. Another impor-tant component of the equation is the viscosity of the water, which is simply a measure of how readily it will flow. Water which contains a great deal of oil is more viscous and flows more slowly than pure water. Both the density and viscosity of the oil and water change depending on temperature.

The Design Examples below use the following Brentwood AccuPac® Cross Flow Media:

To calculate the examples below, we use the equation above and the following constants:

minimum temperature = 70°F µ (viscosity of water in poise) = 0.01 Sw (specific gravity of water) = 0.9975 So (specific gravity of oil) = 0.92 oil globule diameter = 60 microns

Example: To remove oil from a 25 gallon per minute waste-water flow, first convert 25 gpm to 3.34 ft3/minute. Then, using the above equation and constants, find Ah = 111.7 ft2. To use Brentwood CF-1900 Cross Flow Media (which has a specific surface area of 48 ft2/ft3, as listed in the table above), you will need Ah/48 or approximately 3 ft3 of the CF-1900 media for this application. The table below provides more design examples:

Where: Qm is the design flow in ft3/min Ah is the horizontal separator area in ft2

Sw is the specific gravity of the water So is the specific gravity of the oil, and µ is the viscosity of the water in poise

BRENTWOOD ACCUPAC® COALESCING PLATE PACKS

Brentwood Industries manufactures five different types of crossflow media which are applicable in oil/water separators. The media is available in a variety of sheet thicknesses for structural strength and can be cut from our standard modules sizes into the required size for any oil/water separator. The coalescing media is made from rigid, non-flammable PVC sheets, which are UV-protected and resistant to most chemicals and naturally-occuring constituents in the wastewater.

The sheets are thermo-formed specifically for each spacing. The “CF-1900 MA” packs are mechanically assembled (without glues or adhesives) using Brentwood’s patented pressure-sealed attachment tabs, and all the other media types are solvent-bonded together at patented dedicated bonding points.

MATERIAL HANDLING

Wet activated carbon depletes oxygen from air and, therefore, dangerously low levels of oxygen may be encountered. Whenever workers enter a vessel containing activated carbon, the vessel’s oxygen content should be determined and work procedures for potentially low oxygen areas should be followed.

Appropriate protective equipment should be worn. Avoid inhalation of excessive carbon dust. No problems are known to be associated in handling this material.

Please see the product Material Safety Data Sheet for details. Long-term inhalation of high dust concentrations can lead to respiratory impairment.

Use forced ventilation or a dust mask when necessary for protection against airborne dust exposure (see Code of Federal Regulations - Title 29, Subpart Z, par. 1910.1000, Table Z-3).

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 SELECTION & OPERATING CONSIDERATION

The Operating Principle of the Liberty Process Progressing Cavity Pump is based on two pumping elements. One is a high strength steel single thread helical screw rotor that turns in a double thread helical screw stator. The stator is made from a molded elastomer of various selected compounds bonded into a steel tube.

The outer circumference of the turning rotor is in contact with the internal circumference of the stator and provides an effective seal creating cavities of liquid that are moved from the suction end to the discharge end of the pumping elements.

The displacement of the liquid is uniformly positive, without pulsation or turbulence. The rate of flow is proportional to the speed of the rotating rotor. Pressure is uniform and independent of the pump speed, but is attributable to the length of the rotor and stator elements.

1.2 START UP PRECAUTIONS

Dry friction is harmful to Progressing Cavity Pumps. Do not operate the pump until it is filled with the liquid to be pumped.

This liquid serves as a lubricant and as a seal between the rotor and stator and is not a priming operation. Approximately 10% of the pump’s displacement rating will satisfy the cooling and lubricant requirements until full displacement capacity is attained.

WARNING! Non-observance or proper follow-up of the installation, operation and maintenance instructions may result in to either injury to the attending personnel or could even cause catastrophic failure of the pump/equipment.

2.0 INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

2.1 FOUNDATION

Mount the pump on a properly machined and fabricated steel base that is anchored with bolts on a level solid foundation.

2.2 PUMP ALIGNMENT

Alignment of direct driven pumps that are driven by a motor or a speed reducer should be carefully checked after the pump base has been mounted on the foundation. Check the alignment of the coupling halves with a straight edge. Alignment should be checked at least four points 900 around the O.D. of the coupling. A space between the pump and driver shaft ends should be held to no less than 1/8”.

Belt driven pumps should be checked after mounting the pump base on the foundation. Make sure, with the help of a straight edge, that the belts and pulleys are in alignment and that the belts have the proper tension.

2.3 PUMP ROTATION

Pump rotation: The pump can be operated in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction when viewing the pump from the driveshaft end. The recommended operating direction is clockwise when viewing the pump from the driveshaft end. The inlet and discharge ports are related to the rotation of the pump. Please contact Liberty Process Equipment if you have any questions regarding rotation.

2.4.1 PIPING SYSTEM

Piping to pump should generally be the same size as the pump inlet port and discharge port openings. Those systems handling viscous, volatile high pressure or high temperature materials may have to be more appropriately sized.

A. All threaded joints should be coated and sealed with pipe compound.

B. Provide for expansion in the piping system to all for movement and deflection.

C. Use pipe supports to keep the weight of the piping system from causing strain on the pump.

D. Make all lines as direct and free of fittings as possible. Minimize suction line by locating the pump below or close to the liquid being pumped.

E. When the pump is handling abrasive, corrosive liquids, slurries, sludge’s, cements, adhesives or any liquids that harden, it should be flushed clean. The rotation of the pump can be operated both clockwise and counterclockwise to accomplish this operation most thoroughly.

F. It is good practice to consider installing pressure and/or vacuum gauges in both the inlet…
