The mechanical system shall be designed around shutoff VAV, low temperature VAV air handling units (50-degree max supply air); high delta T chilled water systems and hot water boiler. To comply with the demand limiting need of DAFB the use of ICE storage systems shall be provided for systems larger than 30 tons.

6.1.4 In cases where ceiling space does not allow the room for ductwork and piping, low temperature terminal units shall be used. The definition of terminal unit is fan coil units or unit ventilators that are piped in a chase for installation in a classroom or office. These systems shall be installed with air-cooled chillers and ice where needed. Fan coil units (FCU’s) and unit ventilators shall be installed with reheat and be provided with variable air volume controls to match room load with the ability to provide zone temperature and humidity control. In terminal unit applications, a 4-pipe auto changeover control system shall be provided to allow the chilled water coils in the terminal units to provide adequate heat when reheat coils are not adequate to meet heating load. Unit Ventilators shall be provided with face & bypass coil control.

6.1.5 When VAV AHU’s are not an option due to ceiling space, outside air introduction and building pressurization should be provided by a dehumidification air handling unit that provides tempered dehumidified OA at 72F 45% RH introduced directly to the space.

Energy recovery of exhausted air should be used in all cases.

6.1.6 Building pressurization in both VAV AHU’s and FCU’s with central OA units shall be controlled directly by the EMCS system to be slightly positive to reduce infiltration.

6.1.7 Mechanical piping systems shall have independent chilled water and hot water for a true 4-pipe system. Chilled water and hot water systems design should be based on a concentration of propylene glycol necessary to protect from freezing down to +10 degrees Fahrenheit. Chilled water piping shall be designed around a 10-degree F delta T.

Hot water piping/pumping shall be designed around 20-degree F delta T. This requirement will provide an industry standard pipe sizing. Statements of work will require testing to confirm freeze protection at 10 degrees Fahrenheit for both chilled and hot water systems.

6.1.8 The base design temperature for heating hot water systems shall be 180 degrees F supply and 140 degrees return water (40-degree delta T) however, the heating hot water temperatures should fluctuate based on outdoor temperature. Special attention should be paid to hot water boiler condensation and low flow on chillers to avoid falling below the manufacturer’s low temperature/flow requirements

6.1.9 Both of the above systems are to use ICE storage for demand limiting purposes and to provide low temperature water to the VAV air handlers or terminal units. To minimize “dumping”, “stratification” and to avoid the use of fan powered VAV the minimum setting for cooling airflow should be set for 30% (field adjustable).

6.1.10 All systems are to be installed in a manner to allow continued maintenance per the manufacturer’s installation manual.

6.1.10.1 Show unions or flanges and shut off valves at each piece of equipment for maintenance. Ensure unions or flanges are located to allow easy heat exchanger or coil removal. Show coil, heat exchanger and filter removal areas. Weatherproof vents and air intakes should be installed. For all hydronic heating and cooling systems, indicate the installation of shot feeders with chemical treatments (install

Appendix Q Page 16 feeder on outlet of circulation pump with throttling valve in between connections) and diaphragm expansion tanks. All chemically treated water shall be tested by contractor.

6.1.10.2 Use packaged chillers when chilled water systems are specified to keep noise and refrigerant out of mechanical room. If chillers are specified, provide valve and capped with 3” camlock connections near chillers for connection of temporary chillers. +10 F food grade propylene glycol is required for closed loop hydronic systems. Compliance test results are required after construction. Do not specify % of concentration of propylene glycol in lieu of +10 F. Ethylene glycol is prohibited.

6.1.10.3 Flexible ductwork shall not be used for duct mains and runs shall not exceed 12 feet in length. Fiberglass ductboard is not acceptable for use on DAFB.

6.1.10.4 Minimize ceiling and roof-mounted equipment. If equipment must be mounted on the roof, provide metal walkways with fall protection anchors to allow for maintenance. If equipment must be mounted in the ceiling, provide catwalks with access ladders to provide for maintenance of these items.
