Helpful Tips Freezer Usage:
Keep the freezer doors closed.
Only open when needed and for brief and short periods of time.
Food in your freezer will remain frozen for at least 1 day as long as the doors are closed.
Ice cream will get soft quickly. So it may be best to eat it before the power outage.
Refrigerator Usage:
Keep the refrigerator doors closed at all times.
Only open when needed and for brief periods of time to prevent the warm air from entering the refrigerator.
Refrigerators will keep the food cold and unspoiled for about 6 hours.
Typically, condiments will be fine for longer than 6 hours. Leftovers items, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs may be questionable. It is recommended that these items be stored in a cooler with ice and temperature kept constant.
Food Safety Suggestions:
If you have empty freezer space, you may want to freeze some water to make ice to place in the refrigerator to keep the unit temperature cold. Do not forget to allow for the water to expand when freezing water and provide something to catch the water droplets when the ice starts to melt.
You want to have a cooler with ice on hand to store items to eat and avoid having to open the freezer or refrigerator.
You may want to ask a neighbor to see if they can store some of your items in their freezer or refrigerator during the outage.
Check out HECO website: www.HECO.com under Food Safety During and after a Power Outage for additional safety tips.
Electronic Devices:
Prior to the morning power outage, please power down and unplug all of your sensitive electrical equipment(ex. Computers, modems, routers, TV’s, etc.), to avoid loss or damage to your data or electrical equipment.
The night prior to the outage, please charge all of your battery operated devices.
