1.5 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Provide the structural steel steel system, including galvanizing, complete and ready to use. Structural steel systems including design, materials, installation, workmanship, fabrication, assembly, erection, inspection, quality control, and testing must be provided in accordance with AISC/AISI 121 except as modified in this Contract.

1.5.1 General Requirement

Replace existing fish horns structural supports and attachments, and valve box frames and grating in kind with new support members, concrete anchors, bolts, valve box frames and grating. Submit shop drawings for approval prior to fabrication. Prepare in accordance with AISC 326, AISC/AISI 121.

Include complete information for the fabrication and erection of the structure's components, including the location, type, and size of bolts, member sizes and lengths, connection details, blocks, copes, and cuts.

1.5.1.1 Fabricator Qualifications and Erector Qualifications

All new fabrication must be done in the shop. The fabricating plant and fabricator shall be certified under AISC Certification Program for Certified Building Fabricator (BU) certification and for Certified Steel Erector Qualifcations (CSE). Submit copies of the AISC certificate indicating that the fabrication plant meets the specified structural steelwork category and documented experience.

1.5.1.2 Inspector Qualifications

All inspectors, performing structural steel inspection in accordance with these specifications, must be qualified and certified in conformance with

AWS QC1.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 STRUCTURAL STEEL

2.1.1 General

Submit Material Test Reports for governement approval. Structural Steel for fish horns must conform to ASTM A36/A36M, minimum yield strength of 36 ksi, or to ASTM A572/A572M, Grade 50, minimum yield strength of 50 ksi or to ASTM A992/A992M unless otherwise specified.

2.1.2 Concrete Anchors

Replace concrete anchors with post-installed galvanized epoxy anchors with equivalent capacity. The concrete anchors selected must have an approved Internation Code Council ICC-ES Reports and must be approved for use in cracked concrete.

2.1.3 Hinges

Add hinges to one of the sides of each new trashrack per note(s) on the drawings. Submit Trashrack Hinge Design Calculations to the Government for approval.

05 21 00.00 25-3

2.1.4 Trashracks

Replace trashracks and connecting attachments in kind per note(s) on the drawings.

2.1.4.1 Small Fish Horn

Per notes on the drawings, construct a new small fish horn for installation.

2.1.5 Valve Vault Frame and grating

Per notes on drawings, replace the Fish horn valve vault frames and grating in kind at the middle and top tier of the fish horns and add a new frame and grating at the lowest fish horn tier.

2.1.6 Handrail

Design and install a handrail system to be on the top of all concrete valve vaults in the forebay. The handrail is to be designed by an engineer licensed in the State of Oregon and submitted for approval under Handrailing Drawings and Calculations. The handrail is to be designed to resist a 500 lb lateral load applied to the top of the handrail at location that generates the largest reactions possible. The anchors selected need to have an approved ICC-ES Reports and be approved for use in cracked concrete. The handrail to be discontinued at openings to accommodate new access ladder.

2.1.7 Caged Ladder

Ladder rungs on the sides of the existing valve vaults to facilitate access to the top of the structure will be cut off at their base and a new prefabricated galvanized ladder, procured by the Contractor, with cage will be anchored to the existing and new concrete walls to provide access to the top of the valve vaults. Requirements for the new caged ladder can be found in EM 385-1-1. Submittal to be provided to the Government for approval under Caged Ladder. New ladder to be a walk-through style with handrails that extend 42" above the top of the valve vault. New rungs to be serrated or slip-resistant. Anchors for the ladder will have an approved ICC-ES Reports for use in cracked concrete. Ladder and connection details will be submitted to the Government for approval.

2.1.8 Grab Bar

Remove the existing grab bar on the valve vault shown on information only drawing FLD-2-22. New grab bar not needed with new walk-through style fixed ladder.

2.1.9 Angle

Add angle to new concrete for the fish horn valve box raise as shown on S-004.

2.2 FABRICATION

2.2.1 Structural Fabrication

Material must be straight before being laid off or worked. Perform straightening, if necessary, by methods that will not impair the metal.

05 21 00.00 25-4

Sharp kinks or bends will be cause for rejection of the material. Material with welds will not be accepted except where welding is definitely specified, indicated or otherwise approved. Make bends using approved dies, press brakes or bending rolls. Where heating is required, take precautions to avoid overheating the metal and allow it to cool in a manner that will not impair the original properties of the metal. Proposed flame cutting of material, other than structural steel, is subject to approval and must be indicated on detail drawings. Shearing must be accurate and all portions of the work neatly finished. Make corners square and true unless otherwise shown. Fillet re-entrant cuts to a minimum radius of 3/4 inch unless otherwise approved. Provide finished members free of twists, bends and open joints. Tighten bolts, nuts and screws.

2.2.1.1 Dimensional Tolerances for Structural Work

Measure dimensions using an approved calibrated steel tape of approximately the same temperature as the material being measured. The overall dimensions of an assembled structural unit must be within the tolerances indicated on the drawings or as specified in the particular section of these specifications for the item of work. Component members without milled ends must not deviate from the dimensions shown by more than 1/16 inch for members 30 feet or less in length, and by more than 1/8 inch for members over 30 feet in length.

2.2.1.2 Structural Steel Fabrication

Structural steel may be cut by mechanically guided or hand-guided torches, provided an accurate profile with a surface that is smooth and free from cracks and notches is obtained. Prepare surfaces and edges in accordance with AWS D1.1/D1.1M. Where structural steel is not to be welded, chipping or grinding will not be required except as necessary to remove slag and sharp edges of mechanically guided or hand-guided cuts not exposed to view. Chip, grind or machine to sound metal hand-guided cuts which are to be exposed or visible

2.2.2 Bolted Connections

Remove connection without damage to the existing foundation. All bolted connections shall be fully pre-tensioned ASTM A325 galvanized bolts with appropriate nuts and washers unless otherwise indicated. Use beveled washers where bearing faces have a slope of more than 1:20 with respect to a plane normal to the bolt axis.

a. Accurately locate bolt holes, smooth, perpendicular to the member and cylindrical.

b. Drill or subdrill holes for regular bolts and ream in the shop and not more than 1/16 inch larger than the diameter of the bolt.

c. Match-ream or drill holes for fitted bolts in the shop. Remove burrs resulting from reaming. Keep bolt threads entirely outside of the holes. The body diameter of bolts must have tolerances as recommended by AISC 325 for the class of fit specified. Place fitted bolts in reamed holes by selective assembly to provide an LN-2 fit.

d. Holes for high strength bolts must not have diameters more than 1/16 inch larger than bolt diameters. If the thickness of the material is not greater than the diameter of the bolts, the holes may be punched.

If the thickness of the material is greater than the diameter of the

05 21 00.00 25-5 bolts the holes may be drilled full size or subpunched or subdrilled at least 1/8 inch smaller than the diameter of the bolts and then reamed to full size. Poor matching of holes will be cause for rejection.

Drifting occurring during assembly cannot distort the metal or enlarge the holes. Reaming to a larger diameter of the next standard size bolt will be allowed for slight mismatching.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

Following the installation of the new fabricated steel, an inspection will be performed to ensure that the installation meets requirements from the approved shop drawings and from this Section.
