PRELIMINARY SOIL INFORMATION
APPENDIX G: PRELIMINARY SOIL INFORMATION
The subsurface data transmittal report titled Subsurface Data Transmittal, Long-Range Stand-Off (LRSO) Building, Eglin Air Force Base, dated February 22, 2018 and subsequently included in Appendix G was prepared by Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. (SESI) of Mobile, Alabama. The subsurface information submitted in the data report is based upon test borings completed at the approximate locations indicated.
The data in Appendix G represents the best subsurface information available; however, variations may exist in the subsurface between boring locations. It shall be the Contractor’s responsibility to sample/test the soil to meet Specification 31 00 00 requirements. This document does not reflect variations which may occur between test borings. The nature and extent of variations between the test borings may not become evident until construction is performed. Drilling and laboratory testing for the investigation was performed on December 8, 2017. It included the completion of six (6) borings drilled to depths ranging from 10 feet to 100 feet below grade. Laboratory tests were conducted on select available samples following the completion of drilling operations. Boring logs and laboratory test results, as prepared by SESI, are included in the data report.
Groundwater observations at the time of drilling and as provided by SESI, are presented in the data report. It should be noted that fluctuations in water levels may occur over more prolonged periods of readings and can be influenced by various outside factors. It may take groundwater several days, or longer, to reach its hydrostatic levels. Seasonal variations in rainfall, changes to on-site conditions, and changes to off-site conditions can affect groundwater levels. Water levels observed and recorded reflect only those conditions that existed at the time of investigation and may vary from true phreatic groundwater levels.

1.0 GEOLOGIC SETTING
The project site is situated in southeastern Okaloosa County within the Citronelle Formation (QTci). The most widespread unit on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coastal plain, sediments of the Citronelle Formation are of the Pliocene Age and can be traced from Texas across the Gulf Coast into peninsular Florida. The typical section for this formation, named by Matson (1916), is located just south of the city of Citronelle, AL. The Citronelle Formation consists of gray to orange, often mottled, unconsolidated to poorly consolidated, very fine to coarse sandy-gravelly sediments to clayey-muddy sediments. In some areas this formation contains significant amounts of clay, silt and gravel which may occur as beds and lenses and may vary considerably over short distances. Sands of the Citronelle Formation are typically fairly permeable in nature and form the Sand and Gravel Aquifer of the surficial aquifer system. A geologic map of the site is attached in Appendix 1.
2.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION
Six (6) Soil Borings were performed across the project site at locations selected and staked in the field by Burns & McDonnell personnel prior to our mobilization. A Test Location Plan depicting the approximate boring locations is attached in Appendix 2.
Soil borings with Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were advanced to depths ranging from approximately 10 to 100 feet below the existing ground surface using a track mounted CME-45 drill rig. Soil sampling and penetration testing were performed in general accordance with ASTM D 1586 using flight auger and mud rotary drilling techniques. At regular intervals during the process, the drill rods were removed and soil samples were obtained with a standard 2-inch split tube sampler. Soils were sampled continuously or at
2.5 ft sample intervals from the ground surface to a depth of 15 feet, then at five-foot intervals to the depth of the borings. Representative portions of soil samples obtained during the investigation were transported to our laboratory for classification testing. Samples were examined by an engineer and classified in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. Soil descriptions, penetration resistances and lab testing results are shown on the appropriate Soil Boring Log sheets attached in Appendix 3.

3.0 FIELD ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TESTING
Soil resistivity testing was conducted in the field at the requested location within the project area. Field resistivity measurements were conducted utilizing an AEMC 6470 resistance meter and the Wenner 4- Pole Method. The instrument configuration is shown in Figure 1 where “A” is the spacing between the electrodes and “B” is the depth of the electrode below the ground surface. Spacing between the electrodes (A) was initially set at 5 feet and was increased incrementally to distances of up to 30 feet to assess variation in resistance with depth. Field testing indicates resistivity values to vary with depth from between 220 to 350 kohm-cm. Field Resistivity Test results are summarized below in Table 1.

4.0 LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory testing consisted of physical examination and general classification testing of samples obtained during soil test boring operations. Testing included Moisture Content Determination (ASTM D 2216), No. 200 Sieve Washes (ASTM D 1140), California Bearing Ratio Tests (ASTM D4429), Modified Proctor Density Tests (ASTM D1557) and Constant Head Permeability (ASTM D5856). Test results are included on Soil Boring Logs attached in Appendix 3 and on Laboratory Test Data Summary Sheets attached in Appendix 4. Selected soil samples obtained from within the upper 10 feet of the site were forwarded to Pace Analytical Laboratories, Inc. for chemical analysis. The results of these tests are attached in Appendix 5.
Laboratory Constant Head Permeability (ASTM D5856) tests were performed on soil samples obtained at the requested locations to estimate hydraulic conductivity or permeability values of remolded in-situ site soils. Table 2 summarizes the results of laboratory permeability tests. These results are laboratory test data only. The detention designer should consider appropriate design manuals, design criteria and laboratory hydraulic conductivity data for the basis of their design. Additionally, these permeability test result values should not be considered the pond drawdown rate. The drawdown rate is a complex 3-dimensional phenomenon dependent upon numerous factors including pond/system geometry, vertical and horizontal infiltration rates, groundwater mounding, etc.

5.0 GENERAL COMMENTS
While the Soil Borings are representative of subsurface conditions at their respective locations and for their respective vertical reaches, local variations characteristic of the subsurface materials of the region are anticipated and may be encountered. The delineation between soil types shown on the logs is approximate and the description represents our interpretation of subsurface conditions at the designated boring location and on the particular date drilled.
