PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 SOIL COVER AND SOIL FILL
The Contractor must be responsible for obtaining materials that meet the specified requirements. Soil Cover and Soil Fill materials must come from the sources of the Contractor's choosing and meet the following gradation.
Suitable materials for the Soil Cover and Soil Fill must consist of a mixture of gravel, sand, silt, and clay meeting the following gradation:
Gradation for Soil Cover and Soil Fill Materials
Sieve Opening Size Percent Passing
1 inch 100
#4 90 - 100
Gradation for Soil Cover and Soil Fill Materials
Sieve Opening Size Percent Passing
#16 85 - 100
#40 65 - 95
#200 20 - 40
The soil material placed to form a 0.5-foot soil cover on the upper slope must perform as both a compactable soil cover as well as have a textural composition that supports plant growth. Based on these considerations, soil cover/soil fill should have range of clay, silts, sands, and gravels, with suitable materials being classified as ML, SM, or SC in accordance with the Classifications of Soils for Engineering Purpose ASTM D2487. The fine-grained portion of the soil cover and soil fill passing the #40 sieve must have a Liquid Limit less than 45 and a Plasticity Index between 5 and 20 determined in accordance with ASTM D4318. Organic soils PT, OH, and OL are not permitted. The soil must come from a source known to have a healthy medium for the growth of vegetation.
Perform Atterberg Limits and Gradation Compliance Test for Soil Cover and Soil Fill, in accordance with ASTM D4318 and ASTM D6913. Test material initially prior to use in the work, and for every 250 cubic yards or fraction thereof, thereafter. The Contracting Officer may request additional tests at any time during construction, at no additional cost to the Government. All test results must be provided to the Contracting Officer within 24 hours of the test completion.
The contractor is also required to provide 1 cubic yard of soil sample for Soil Cover and Soil Fill material.
2.2 Gravel Interface Layer
The gradation of gravel interface layer material must conform to CDT Std Specs, CDT SS 39, Type A, 1/2 inch material. The use of recycled materials, including processed reclaimed asphalt concrete, PCC, LCB, or CTB (Portland Cement Concrete, Lean Concrete Base and Cement Treated Base), are prohibited. Submit laboratory test report demonstrating that the material meets specified requirements.
PART 3 EXECUTION
No Soil Cover material must be placed on any part of the Soil-Filled Quarry Stone surface until such areas have been inspected and approved by the Contracting Officer.
3.1 SOIL COVER PLACEMENT ON TOP OF SOIL FILLED QUARRY STONE
Place Soil Cover onto the Soil-Filled Quarry Stone surface to the lines and grade shown on the Drawings at a thickness of 0.5 feet. Compact Soil Cover material by routing track mounted earthwork equipment on the entire Soil Cover surface a minimum of one pass. Compaction by use of vibratory l2edgcmy equipment is not be permitted. There is not a required level of compaction. Place the Soil Cover material in one lift of sufficient thickness to achieve the thickness shown on the Drawings (6")lift. Apply water to the surface for dust control only. No water is necessary for compaction. Place the Soil Cover such that it does not displace any of the underlying Soil-Filled Quarry Stone. Equipment used to place Soil Cover must not damage or rut the underlying material.
Provide to the Contracting Officer, for approval, surveyed cross sections taken after the placement of Soil Cover (see submittal "Post-Construction Survey Data") in both PDF and CADD format for quantity measurement. These cross sections must be taken at the same locations as the Pre-Construction Survey cross sections referenced in Section 01 35 13 SPECIAL PROJECT PROCEDURES. An allowable tolerance for Soil Cover of minus 0.0 inches to plus 3.0 inches measured normal to the prescribed grade is permitted in the final dressing, provided that there are no abrupt changes, and the final slope has positive drainage.
3.2 SOIL FILL PLACEMENT IN QUARRY STONE
The mixture of the Soil Fill and Quarry Stone to create the Soil-Filled Quarry Stone as defined in Section 35 42 38 STONE PROTECTION must be performed on-site and in a manner to prevent segregation. The intent of the Soil Fill within the Quarry Stone matrix is only to fill voids.
Pre-mix of Soil Fill and Quarry Stone at the quarry is not allowed.
3.3 CONDUCT OF WORK
Maintain and protect the Soil Cover and Soil Fill in a satisfactory condition at all times until final completion and acceptance of all work under the Contract. If the Contracting Officer determines the hauling equipment causes horizontal shears or slick sides, rutting, quaking, heaving, cracking or excessive deformation of the river bank, limit the type, load, or travel speed of the hauling equipment on the river bank at the direction of the Contracting Officer. Replace any approved material which is lost in transit or rendered unsuitable after being placed on the bank and before final acceptance of the work. No additional payment will be made for the suitable replacement material. Excavate and remove from the river bank any material which the Contracting Officer considers objectionable. Dispose of such objectionable material and refill the excavated area as directed, all at no cost to the Government. The Contractor may be required to remove, at his own expense, any river bank material placed outside of prescribed slope lines.
