Fort McCoy - CAD Standard

Release 1.0 March 2014

The A/E/C CAD Standard is compliant with Version 4.0 of the U.S. National CAD Standard®.

The A/E/C CAD Standard contains supplemental materials and DoD specific requirements not addressed in the U.S. National CAD Standard®

The Fort McCoy CAD Standard contains supplemental materials and DoD specific requirements not addressed in the U.S. National CAD and A/E/C Standards®

3 Fort McCoy Cad Standard March 2014

Abstract

The Fort McCoy CAD Standard has been developed by the Fort McCoy Engineering Division for use in design of facilities, site development, utilities, and other infrastructure to eliminate redundant CAD standardization efforts within the Directorate of Public Works, Fort McCoy. The manual is part of an initiative to develop a proprietary CAD standard that incorporates existing industry, national, and international, and Fort McCoy specific standards.

The Fort McCoy CAD Standard includes presentation graphics, Text styles and fonts, level/layer assignments, electronic file naming, use of sheet manager SOP, and standard symbology. The Engineering Divisions primary goal is to develop a CAD standard that is generic enough to give designers and Architectural/Engineering (A&E) firms’ flexibility when designing and operating AutoCAD while incorporating existing Fort McCoy and other industry standards. It is intended that these guidelines ensure consistency in production and allow for both short and long term usability of the construction documentation. The issuance of this Standard does not relieve the Engineer of Record from assuring that the standard details are correct and applicable to their specific project.

6 Fort McCoy Cad Standard March 2014

A&E Implementation General: Fort McCoy DPW has taken the initiative to standardize Autodesk Design Suite, Autodesk MEP, and Civil 3D overlays. Much of the overlay base software has been adapted by DPW. Some areas have been customized to better represent Fort McCoy and the presentation of Design Documents.

1. Existing CAD Reference Drawings

a. Fort McCoy DPW may provide the A&E with either existing CAD drawings or CAD drawings on which may be used for space determination. These AutoCAD files are for the convenience of the contractor only.

b. These existing drawings must be used as a base reference only. Unless otherwise specified by the contract documents, the A&E is responsible for field verification of existing conditions and ensuring that all electronic deliverables are accurate and comply with the contract and this CAD Standard requirement. It is unlikely that existing CAD drawings issued conform to this CAD Standard.

2. Fort McCoy CAD file Policy

a. Fort McCoy recognizes that there are other vendors that may not use the same CAD systems as our DPW. However, the AutoCAD Design Suite and Civil 3D are the only acceptable formats in which DWG files may be delivered.

b. All DWG files and CAD drawings must be able to be manipulated, changed, and updated using standard AutoCAD drafting procedures.

c. Autodesk Design Suite Package and Civil 3D are the required method for use during design and for final design delivery to DPW.

3. CAD Template

a. Fort McCoy DPW will issue, upon request of the contractor, its standard Title Block. Please refer to the Sheet Manager Section and Appendix C of this standard for more information regarding the Fort McCoy CAD Template.

b. Use of Sheet Set Manager is required for all projects regardless of size, scope, and complexity. Refer to Appendix A for instructions on creating a drawing from the sheet set template.

4. Design, Record, and Asbuilt Documents

a. Design Drawings & Specifications:

i. The Final “For Construction” set of Drawings (each individual sheet) and cover page(s) of the specifications must be signed and sealed by the responsible design professional, whom is legally liable for its contents. The construction contractor is responsible to record all KO/COR approved changes as described in the contract documents.

b. AsBuilt Drawings:

i. At the conclusion of construction the contractor shall incorporate all COR approved changes that have been noted in the AsBuilt Drawings during construction into the AutoCAD corrected Record Drawings.

c. Record Drawings:

i. Record Drawings shall state “RECORD DRAWING” and the date with DD MMM

YYYY format in the lower right corner.

7 Fort McCoy Cad Standard March 2014

1. External References Files (X-Reference) shall utilize relative pathing. This is also applicable to all Title Block information. Refer to Appendix B for Instructions on how to set path Type to Relative.

2. All Image files must be embedded within the DWG file.

3. AutoCAD Design Suite, MEP, or Civil 3D 2010 or newer is required.

4. The Record Drawings shall be provided on compact disks (CD) in both DWG and

PDF formats. PDF formatted drawings shall be plotted electronically full size and orientated such that it opens the way the drawing would normally be read.

5. Formatting Drawings

a. CAD drawings shall be drafted at full scale. Architectural Units (feet & inches) shall be used for facility measurements. Engineering Units (Feet and tenths/hundredths of a foot) shall be used for utility and site development.

i. Unless otherwise specifically defined by Fort McCoy, the User Coordinate System (UCS) shall be set to World with the origin point used of (0,0,0) as the lower left hand corner as the most prominent point of the facility. Fort McCoy may specify GIS global coordinates be used instead with respect to established benchmarks.

ii. Title Block - The Fort McCoy Standard Title Block shall be used on all drawings at all levels of design. i.e. 35%, 65%, 90%, Construction Drawings, and Record Drawings.

The Fort McCoy Standard Title Block is available upon request from DPW.

iii. Dimensions – Arrows shall be used when dimensioning drawings in MEP and Civil Drawings. Ticks shall be used when dimensioning architecturally oriented drawings. All dimensions shall be associated with Drawing Objects(s).

iv. Schedules – Use Fort McCoy customized schedules for production drawings.

b. All Design Drawings shall be formatted as a Layout

i. Layout (Sheet) - is the Plot Ready Drawing with views inserted, drawing notes / legend added and title block information updated in the sheet set manager. The standard layout does not have any viewports the view port is created when the view is added to the layout. A Layout is created from one or more Views.

ii. View - Dimensioned / Noted Views that are ready to be placed in layouts, the colors of the elements in views should be set so they match the appropriate pen table settings. The sheets are plot ready, however the sheet set information, legends, and drawing notes need to be added. A View is created from one or more Constructs.

iii. Construct - Is the basic drawing that can be used as an X-reference into views. A construct will often be used as an X-reference for multiple Views ultimately ending up in multiple Layouts.

c. All drawing files submitted to the government during the projects development and at the end must be formatted in Autodesk Design Suite, Autodesk MEP, or Autodesk Civil 3D release 2013 or older. Non-compliance with this policy will result in the rejection of applicable project closeout files and documents. DXF files will not be accepted.

d. The three formats that may be required of submission are full size Hard Set(s), PDF, and DWG AutoCAD files. All three formats are to be exact production replications of each other regardless of the medium (electronic or paper).

i. The PDF is an electronic duplicate of the hard copy. Its production is a 1:1 scale and files must be uncompressed. No other format than PDF is acceptable. The file shall be

8 Fort McCoy Cad Standard March 2014 created directly from the AutoCAD file and be written in Black/White with appropriate line weight scaling.

6. Room Numbering

a. Rooms must be uniquely identified on each floor in order to track corresponding attributes in an inventory. Existing rooms shall be numbered by existing numbers.

b. Room Numbering Rules. Unless special instructions are provided by Fort McCoy, room numbers shall be assigned using the following rules:

i. The first digit of the room number shall be representative of the floor level.

ii. Rooms shall be logically numbered in order to allow facility to be easily navigated.

iii. If facility is existing, the same numbering schema should be used for the renovation or building addition.

7. Blocks

a. Fort McCoy does not currently have a “block” library nor does it impose the use of any particular block definition or other libraries. The following rules shall be used when handling block type entities:

i. Block layers shall be created on the “0” layer.

ii. If transitioning a entity into AutoCAD the layer must revert to the “0” layer when exploded.

iii. The North Arrow block shall be located just to the left of the Drawing Detail Title.

8. AutoCAD Design Software Platforms

a. Use of AutoCAD Civil 3D is required for all utility, transportation, and site plans.

b. Use of AutoCAD Architectural overlay is required for all Architectural drawings.

c. Use of AutoCAD Mechanical Electrical Plumbing (MEP) overlay is required for all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings.

d. Fort McCoy plans to expand the use of AutoCAD Design Software in the future, but is currently limited to AutoCAD Civil 3D at this time. Design delivery from the A&E Firm / Design Contractor is required in one or more of the before mentioned Software Platforms.

e. All drawings shall be developed with the use of AutoCAD Architectural, MEP, Civil 3D, or Design Suite software.

9 Fort McCoy Cad Standard March 2014

CAD File/Layout Names/Drawing Set Organization

1. CAD File

a. CAD file names shall be given to each drawing with respect to their layer within the design documents. i.e. construct, view, or sheet (Refer to Screen Shot 4-1 for visual representation of a projects folder structure and file pathing).

b. Example:

i. The cover sheet, G0.1, of a project “NEW TEST TEMPLATE 11-2-2013” will have a
