BLACK BEAUTY RESERVOIR
INTRODUCTION
The Black Beauty National Dam Identification number NV10103 is located off stream at the mouths of Cat Canyon and Dry Cat Canyon. The dam holds water for the Hawthorne
Army Depot. The inspection took place on 14 November 2018
DAM DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY
The dam is an earth fill embankment approximately 50 ft. in height. The dam was design by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) in cooperation with the United
States Navy (USN). Construction was accomplished by USN Bureau of Yards and
Docks. The dam was completed in 1952. The dam is located at approximately 4678 feet elevation. Black Beauty is capable of receiving water from all of the water sheds; Cat
Creek, Rose Creek, Squaw Creek and Cottonwood.
INSPECTION PROCEDURES
The field inspection included a complete visual inspection by David Musselman of the berm and spill way channel. A camera, notebook and tape measure were used.
Dam
The dam consists of an earthen embankment of fairly homogenous material. The interior of the dam was lined with bentonite type clay. The top ten feet of the interior of the dam is protected with 6 in. and larger riprap, to protect the embankment from the wave action of the water.
Spillway
The spillway is a concrete channel and a ditch in the south corner of the reservoir. The spillway is in good shape. There is a wooden flapper across the concrete spillway at the fence around the reservoir.
INSPECTION RESULTS
The top of the dam (road way) shows evidence that water has been standing on the north east and west sides. The downstream faces show woody shrubs starting to regrow on the face. There was no visual evidence of rodent dens or holes on the downstream face.
The internal face was examined in the area of the intake piping it showed no evidence of leakage.
The roadway is cut below the top of the concrete that holds the fence posts.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The dam is in good condition overall. The crest of the embankment needs away for the water to drain off the top of the reservoir without eroding the face of the embankment.
Some work needs to be done to help maintain that condition.
The woody vegetation needs to be removed from the outside face of the reservoir (Figure
1).
The spillway was clear of debris and the flapper appears to working correctly.
