About this file

This technical manual provides guidance on jacking procedures for the C-130J aircraft. It outlines approved jacking points on the wings, fuselage, and landing gear for single or complete aircraft jacking. Figures show details on wing and fuselage jacking provisions, as well as nose and main gear tire change jacking points. The manual also specifies gross weight and center of gravity limits for jacking operations depending on aircraft model and configuration. Proper jacking equipment types are identified along with safety considerations for inflight damage prevention during single strut jacking.

This solicitation is seeking fixed price construction services to build a new approximately 46,600 square foot aircraft fuel cell maintenance and corrosion control hangar at Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, California. The hangar will support HC-130J and HH-60G aircraft and include maintenance shops, administrative spaces, and mechanical/electrical rooms. Site work involves clearing eight existing facilities, grading, paving, underground utilities and security fencing. A pre-bid conference and site visit will be held on August 11, 2020. The base NAICS code is 236220 and magnitude is $25-100 million. Plans and addenda will be posted to SAM.gov. Questions are due by specified dates to the points of contact listed. The performance period is 532 days from notice to proceed.

Section IX. LIFTING AND JACKING

WARNING

Do not attempt to jack an airplane by over-inflating the shock struts.

9-1 GENERAL JACKING INFORMATION.

The airplane can be jacked with axle jacks or with wing and/or fuselage jacks, depending on the condition of the airplane. Axle jacks are used under built-in points on the base of each strut, or under removable jacking and towing fittings which can be installed on any of the main landing gear struts. A wing jack may be installed under a jacking point on each wing. This point is on the underside of the wing, just inboard of the wing break at the rear beam. Fuselage jacking points are on each side of the nose at FS 165. The gross weight and center of gravity of the airplane must be taken into consideration before the airplane is jacked. If these are not within limits, it is not safe to jack the airplane. The nose of the airplane can be jacked with two fuselage jacks or using the NLG jacking bar. The airplane may be jacked on one side only using axle jacks. The entire airplane may be jacked using two fuselage jacks and two wing jacks. Fuselage (nose) jacks must be used in manifolded pairs. Only jacks of the same type with rams of equal size should be manifolded. This prevents asymmetrical forces when jacking.

9-1.1 Wing and Fuselage Jacking Provisions. Figure 9-1 shows jacking provisions for wing and fuselage jacks. The Jacking Job Guide Manual includes a task jacking complete airplane using wing and fuselage jacks.

9-1.2 Nose Gear Tire Change Jacking Provisions. The Jacking Job Guide Manual contains three nose jacking tasks, one for axle jacking of the nose landing gear with at least one tire inflated, one for fuselage jacking of the airplane nose, and one for jacking the nose landing gear, which can be used when both nose landing gear tires are flat. Figure 9-2 shows the use of the nose gear jacking bar.

NOTE

If one main gear tire is blown on either side, the airplane may be towed or taxied from an active runway or taxiway.

9-1.3 Main Gear Tire Change Jacking Provisions. The Jacking Job Guide Manual contains three main gear jacking tasks, one for use when one tire on a side is blown, one using integral jack pads, and one using jacking and towing fittings. When one tire on a side is blown, the strut lock must be used to prevent piston movement during jacking. If both tires on one side are blown, the airplane should be jacked using wing and fuselage jacks, as required. Figure 9-2 shows the use of the 35-ton jack and jacking and towing fittings on the main gear.

9-1.4 Jacking Equipment. The types of equipment used to jack the airplane are identified in the Jacking Job Guide Manual.

9-1.5 Allowable Weight Limits for Jacking. Figure 9-3 and figure 9-4 show gross weight versus center of gravity limits for jacking; figure 9-3 is for C-130J (Short) airplanes while figure 9-4 is for C- 130J (Long) airplanes. The following should be taken into consideration when using these figures:. These figures are based on allowable jack pad loads.. Before jacking a single main landing gear strut at an airplane weight exceeding 140,000 pounds, confirm that the other tire on the same side is not underinflated for the airplane weight. If both
