SECTION C - DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATIONS/WORK STATEMENT
STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW) for LOAD, ASSEMBLE, AND PACK (LAP) OF 155MM M231 AND M232 Type MODULAR ARTILLERY CHARGE SYSTEM (MACS) PROPELLING
CHARGES
C.1 SCOPE
C.1.1 OBJECTIVE
The contractor shall supply man-hours, materials, and facilities to load assemble and pack (LAP) 155mm M231 and M232 TYPE MACS propelling charge increments. All M231 propelling charge increments shall be in accordance with (IAW) assembly drawing number 12972389 and DTL12972389. All M232 TYPE propelling charge increments shall be IAW assembly drawing number 12972406 and DTL12972406 or
12972406(Draft) and DTL12972406(Draft).
C.1.2 BACKGROUND
The effort is the production of the M231 and M232 TYPE Modular Artillery Charge System. The 155mm M231/M232 TYPE propelling charges known as MACS (Modular Artillery Charge System) are two different propelling charges designed and developed at Picatinny Arsenal, which provide a complete zoning solution for 155mm artillery applications by using multiples of a basic increment. The M231 charge(s) is (are) used at lower zones (Zones 1 & 2), while the M232 TYPE charges are used at higher zones (Zones 3 thru 5). Both the M231 and M232 TYPE charges are bi-directional center core ignition, granular propellant assembled in a rigid combustible cartridge case. The M231 and M232
TYPE charges do have unique design differences. All M231 increments are identical allowing them to be interchangeable (likewise with the
M232 TYPE). The 155mm MACS propelling charges will be capable of being handled by automatic loading/resupply equipment and also manually, which allows MACS to be used with currently fielded howitzers and future planned artillery systems.
