About this file

This file is a Draft Manpack Radio Performance Requirements Document (PRD) detailing comprehensive technical specifications for a multi-channel, multi-waveform tactical radio system for the U.S. Army. The PRD outlines extensive requirements for a software-defined radio capable of operating across multiple frequency bands and communication modes, including SINCGARS, MUOS, WREN, UHF SATCOM, and other tactical waveforms, with robust environmental, electromagnetic, and security specifications. Key requirements include two independent channels supporting simultaneous voice and data communications, NSA Type 1 encryption, ability to operate in dismounted and mounted configurations, compatibility with various vehicle mounts, and performance across extreme environmental conditions from -40°C to +55°C.

The document specifies detailed technical parameters including radio weight (maximum 16 pounds for dismounted configuration), battery life (8-24 hours), transmission ranges (3-40 km depending on configuration), and extensive compatibility with military communication systems and platforms. The PRD supports the Army's Integrated Tactical Network modernization efforts, with manufacturing goals of up to 500 units monthly and a desire for minimal maintenance requirements. The radio must be certified for high-assurance communications at the SECRET level, with contractors required to establish technical data escrow accounts to support long-term sustainment. The current incumbent contractors are L3Harris and Rockwell-Collins, with a follow-on procurement planned for award around September 2026.
