SITE INVESTIGATION REPORT
1. Historic Preservation Assessment
The Little Rock US Bankruptcy Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The building went through a major renovation and restoration in 1997 to locate the US Bankruptcy Courts of the Eastern District in the building. The building was originally built in 1881 and contained one courtroom on the 3rd floor and the Post Office on the 1st floor. In 1897 the building was expanded to the North to add a 2nd courtroom on the 3rd floor and enlarge the size of the Post Office on the 1st floor. The Post office expanded again in 1918 by adding a wing on both the East and West sides of the building.
A final expansion and restoration in 1997 added space on the first and 2nd floors by adding flanking wings on the north side of the East and West wings.
The finishes in the following historic spaces in the building were damaged by the water leak and must be restored to their previously restored condition.
1st floor 1881 Public Lobby
3rd floor 1881 Historic Courtroom 3rd floor 1881 Attorney / Witness Room 3rd floor 1881 Judges Chamber & Suite 4th floor 1881 Courtroom Balcony
Since the building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Region 7 Regional Historic Preservation Officer (RHPO) as coordinating official responsible for Section 106 review by the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) will be required for all work undertaken in the building. All work within the historic areas will require adherence to the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation.
