6.3.1 The intent of this section is to establish tolerances that are consistent with modem construction practice yet are governed by the effect that permissible deviations will have upon the structural action or operational function of the structure.

6.3.2 Deviations from the established lines, grades, and dimensions will be permitted to the extent set forth in these specifications.

6.3.3 Concrete work that exceeds the tolerance limits specified in these specifications or shown on the drawings shall be remedied or removed and replaced at the expense of and by the Contractor.

6.3.4 Standard tolerances for form work and concrete placement shall be as follows, unless otherwise noted on drawings:

• Variation of individual structures ±1/8 inch from plan.

• Variation from specified top of concrete elevation: ± 1/8 inch.

• Variation of pier diameters: ±3 inch -0.5 inch.

• Variation of anchor bolt spacing in a single base plate or support

±1/16 inch.

• Variation between groups of anchor bolts: ±1/16 inch.

• Variation from level of surface of slab: Surface finish shall be to

FF 50 and FL 38 overall with minimum local values of FF 25 and FL

17. Time of measurement shall be at the time equipment is placed on the slab. Deflection of exposed sides of concrete walls and slabs: 0.050 inches per foot of length with maximum of 1 inch for entire length.

6.4 REINFORCEMENT

6.4.1 Steel reinforcing bars and fabric shall be placed in the concrete where shown on the drawings.

6.4.2 Before being placed, surfaces of reinforcement shall be cleaned of heavy flaky rust, loose-mill scale, dirt, grease, and other foreign substances.

6.4.3 Reinforcement shall be accurately placed and secured in position so that it will not be displaced during the placing of the concrete. At no time shall reinforcement be left in contact with earth after placing concrete.

Minimum cover shall be maintained.

6.4.4 Welding or tack-welding of grade 60 reinforcing bars will not be permitted. Supplying of additional reinforcement to prevent displacement or hold reinforcing in place shall be at the expense of the Contractor.

6.4.5 Reinforcing steel shall be securely wired and supported to provide clear spacing, as shown on the foundations detail drawings. Reinforcement will be inspected for compliance with requirements as to size, shape, length, splicing, position, and amount after it has been placed.

6.4.6 Unless shown otherwise, minimum cover over reinforcing steel shall be:

• Top of slabs: 2.0 inches.

• Bottom of slabs-on-grade: 3.0 inches.

• Top of piers: 2.0 inches.

• Sides and Bottom of piers and slabs: 3.0 inches.

6.4.7 Splice reinforcing steel according to ACT standards unless shown otherwise. Do not splice adjacent bars at same points unless approved by the

Owner. Splice length shall be as shown on the drawings. Reinforcing splicing shall only occur where necessary due to bar length or placement.

6.4.8 Unless shown otherwise, at corners or intersections of concrete walls, footings and continuous footings, horizontal steel is to be tied by dowels to match horizontal steel size and spacing (minimum 3'- 6" long legs on dowel).

6.4.9 Bars up to No. 7 may be cold bent once. Preheating is required for subsequent straightening or bending.

6.4.10 Heat for bending or straightening bars shall be applied as uniformly as possible over a length of bar equal to approximately 10 bar diameters. The bar temperature shall be between 1100° and 1200° F.

6.5 ANCHORBOLTS

6.5.1 Contractor shall install anchor and hold-down bolts into the concrete by means of a jig. This jig will be compatible with the holes in the bearing plate. This is to ensure a true fit when steel structures are erected.

6.6 PROTECTION AND CURING

6.6.1 Contractor shall protect all concrete against damage until final acceptance by Owner.

6.6.2 Concrete shall be protected against freezing temperatures by being kept at a temperature not lower than 50°F for at least 72 hours after it is placed.

Recording thermometers capable of showing maximum and minimum temperature supplied and maintained by the Contractor shall be used to determine surface temperature at the north side top of the concrete mass.

Thermometers used shall be accurate and inspected twice a day by the

Contractor and the Engineer. Minimum and maximum temperatures shall be recorded at each inspection.

6.6.3 Concrete that is water cured shall be protected against freezing temperatures for the duration of the curing period, 28 days. Where artificial heat is employed, special care shall be taken to prevent the concrete from drying.

6.6.4 Concrete and concrete-curing membrane shall be protected against damage by covering with plywood, sand, or other suitable material. After the danger of damage has diminished, the Contractor shall remove and dispose of such covering and all other foreign materials.

6.6.5 Concrete floors shall be cured with polyethylene-film covering.

6.6.6 Concrete cable trenches or pull boxes, where used, shall be cured by water curing or polyethylene-film covering.

6.6.7 Exposed-formed surfaces of all other pedestals, piers, and support foundations shall be cured by water curing, resin-base curing compound, or polyethylene-film curing.

6.6.8 If concrete is cured with curing compound, all surfaces of such concrete upon which equipment or metalwork will be grouted in place shall be cleaned thoroughly of all curing compound by wet sandblasting.

6.6.9 If concrete is water cured, the concrete shall be kept continuously moist for at least 28 days after being placed by sprinkling or spraying.

6.6.10 Resin based curing compound shall be a white-pigment scaling compound that forms a water-retaining membrane on surface of concrete.

6.6.11 Curing compound shall be applied to concrete surfaces by spraying one coat to provide a continuous uniform white membrane over all areas.

Coverage shall not exceed one hundred fifty (150) square feet per gallon.

Application shall be increased on rough surfaces, as necessary, to obtain required continuous membrane. All surfaces shall be kept continually moist until sealing compound is applied. As soon as surface film of moisture disappears, but while the surface still has a damp appearance, sealing compound shall be applied.

6.6.12 Curing with polyethylene film shall be by completely covering the designated concrete surfaces with polyethylene film to provide an airtight, water-retaining film over the entire concrete surface for at least 7 days.

As soon as the concrete has hardened sufficiently to prevent damage, all surfaces shall be thoroughly moistened by spraying them lightly with water and then covering them completely with the polyethylene film. Edges of the polyethylene strips shall be lapped to affect a seal to adjacent strips, and, at the extreme edge of the curing area, held tightly against the concrete surface. The polyethylene film shall be secured adequately to withstand wind and to prevent circulation of air inside the curing film.

6.7 FINISHING

6.7.1 All tie holes, visible on removal of forms shall be filled with concrete mortar of the same proportions as originally used in the foundations.

6.7.2 All vertical surfaces that are exposed above finish grade shall receive a floated finish. The surface shall be wetted and rubbed with a wood float in a uniform circular motion with fine sand being rubbed into the texture until the resulting surface is even and uniform in color and texture.

6.7.3 Horizontal surfaces that are exposed shall receive a broom finish.

Brooming shall begin when the water sheen has disappeared.

6.7.4 All exposed 90-degree edges on outdoor foundations shall be chamfered at

1/4 inch.
