About this file

This document is a preliminary self-supporting tower design created by Valmont Industries, Inc. for the Manchester Police Department in Connecticut, specifically for a communications tower to be installed at 358 South Main Street. The design is for a 180-foot tall, H-22' self-supporting telecommunications tower designed to meet TIA-222-H standards, located in Hartford County, with a tower risk category of III. The tower is engineered for a 130 mph basic wind speed per the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code, with additional design considerations for a 50 mph wind with 1.50 inches of ice, and includes features such as a 12-line waveguide ladder and built-in climbing facility.

The tower design specifies detailed technical specifications including material strengths (A572-50 and A572-58 grades), leg configurations, diagonal measurements, and appurtenance loading at various elevations. The design includes specific equipment mounting points for lightning rods and other telecommunications infrastructure, with a shielding factor of 0.8 applied to all EPA loading. Maximum corner reactions at the base are documented, with reactions for both 130 mph wind and 50 mph wind with ice scenarios. The tower has been rated at 95.9% efficiency and is prepared for potential installation as part of the Town of Manchester's communications infrastructure project.

PRELIMINARY SELF-SUPPORTING TOWER DESIGN – GENERAL NOTES

1. The TIA standard used is per Valmont’s investigation of the state code adoption at the time of design. Please contact Valmont for reevaluation if changes are required.

2. Please confirm the loading and risk category shown on the preliminary tower design sheet.

3. Valmont manufactures the antenna mounts used in the design.

4. If not provided, all dishes are assumed to have an azimuth of zero and are installed on legs, A, B, and C, with the apex of leg A facing true north.

5. When possible, feedlines are assumed to be stacked on two rows on wave guide ladders (unless leg brackets are requested) to minimize wind effect.

6. Unless otherwise requested, no additional climbing ladder is included if the tower has a built-in climbing facility, to minimize wind effect. A safety line is included.

7. Should any changes to the above items be required, please contact Valmont for reevaluation prior to ordering PE-stamped permit drawings, construction drawings, or tower materials.

8. Outside climbing ladder not included. Tower sections designed to act as climbing facility.

9. Design includes one 12-line waveguide ladder.

10. Shielding factor (Ka) of 0.8 applied to all EPA loading.

11. 130 mph wind speed used per 2022 CT State Building Code.
